Just dumped the oil and checked the genuine Suzuki Oil Filter.

It says 2 turns after touching gasket.

Blimey 720 degrees sounds a bit much. Does it seem OK to you lot?

Hand tight is all I've ever done. If it's hard to get at the filter I'll use a filter socket and try to simulate hand tight.

Hand tight - and as it says, check it when you run it up.

After a Google it was 2 turns.
I managed 1.25 turns by hand. Then fashioned a tightener.
Wound a strip of ratchet strap round it. Grabbed with Molegrips. Twisted thru 180 then was able to get another half turn when it gripped

Good luck getting that off next time. Two full turns? Sounds like product liability lawyers are writing the manuals these days.

Two full turns sounds fine to me, surprised it doesn't have a torque to tighten it up to. You can buy large sockets that fit oil filters, they're not expensive, I don't understand why anyone would use a strap wrench on one, the Honda one is particularly good as it has a threaded bit that makes getting the filter out of the socket lots easier

There's no nut on end to tighten it.

2 turns is the same as the GSXS as it's the same motor. On the GSXS forum there's been a lot of talk about it, from people who do hand tight only to those that use a torque wrench. The torque setting is 20nm. I don't have a torque wrench (well I do but don't trust it from experience) so last time I did hand tight and then another half turn with the socket. I bought the HiFlo filter with the nut on the end. The HiFlo filter says hand tight only, unless specified in the bike manual. There is also talk that the HiFlo one has a different gasket vs the OE so needs less turns...bugger knows if true.

Anyway hand tight plus half a turn didn't see an leak for the last year. The OE filter, fitted by St Neots Suzuki, I took off wasn't overly tight.

I use a thing like that on the BMW, mainly because the filter is recessed into the sump and you can't get your hands on it once it's spun on.
I think i generally just do it up with the wrench "tight enough" by feel.

If you forget a liberal spread of oil before fitting it, then it'll weld itself on, and be an absolute bastard to get off.

I noticed the HiFlo filter came pre oiled. I gave it another dose just in case!

If it's any consolation, last time i changed the oil/filter on the Yamaha, I managed to undo the filter by hand.
The whole point of the big thick O ring is to seal and grip the mating face. Too tight is just as bad as too loose!

I tested it again today and was still tight as hell.
Did 50 mile ride and no leaks.
