So i was thinking of getting one of these for inflating tyres. Yesterday i had one which the rim was slightly dinged and i couldn't get to seat on the bead. I was heading to my mate at his shop anyway so took the wheel, what do you know, with a compressor it popped straight up.

He had a Bambi, but they're a bit too spendy... so was thinking of this SGS.

I then need a hose kit to get the Presta inflated, but that can wait for a bit more ideas/discussion.

Any experience of these then?

I don’t have a silent one - just as similar powered one that is branded Draper.
Had it for 5 years - and only gets used for seating tubeless. It’s excellent

Yeah the Bambi was proper proper silent... like insanely so.. You barely knew it was running.

I don't think the SGS is quite in that league... but fairly silent would be nice.

How do you deal with the Presta side of things, valve core out to seat it ?
There's the Park Tools INF-2 which is apparently amazing... but spendy


or a few things like this Prestacycle head which is a bit less spendy.

I have one of these which is basically the same as you linked too and I think it's great.
It is no where near silent but it's quiet enough not to piss my neighbours off.
Takes maybe 4 mins to fill up when switched on from empty.
The Tank pressure switch is set to around 100psi and you can easily adjust the regulator
so that you get anywhere from 0-100 out of the air line which comes in very handy when my friend
cant seat his tubeless tyres on his mtb rims.
With an airgun plugged in to it and trigger held on the tank pressure doesn't drop below about 25/30psi

Asfar as presta valves go thats what he uses on his bike too and we just use the cheap presta to Schrader adapters
and use normal car tyre inflators.

I've bought it and the host/attachement kit for now. It's only a cheapy attachment kit but it'll do for some testing.

Comes with a dedicated operator/engineer/noise detector!

She is super good at noise detecting, its amazing how she can hear a car pull up outside when I am listening to the wireless radio

I just use one of those cheap brass adapters

I just got a pair of those to try it out with the packaged gun/air.

silent may be stretching things a little... but pretty quiet is deffo there. Good enough that it wouldn't massively disturb a conversation anyway.

Question then.

Assuming it's used like once a month or so, do you leave it full or empty? Takes about 45s to fill it, so it's not a question of time really.. more from a safety/normal practice perspective.

I leave mine full of air but with the power turned off. It'll take years to corrode through, and even more if you drain the take every decade or so.

I'd suggest a good buy would be safety couplings for the air hose. They have to be depressuried before they release, there's a possiblity that normal ones can decouple by accident when being dragged about the floor.

No worries. The Compressor won't move, the hose will rarely move... it could be a 5-6 times a year it actually gets used..

No worries really then. My experience has been when using more than one hose and the coupling is on a roughish floor.

There's enough energy stored in the hose to flail it about alarmingly.

So, it looks like the connector on the Gun from Park Tools is a 3/8 and the hose i've got is a 1/4

What's the best way of making both compatible with eachother ?

It looks like the screw in connector on the PArk i could swap for the right type to go into a 1/4 connector ?

I'm tempted to just buy this though which will go straight on i think

Assuming it's a rotary screw type of compressor? Silent ones usually are.

Just make sure you turn it off at the mains when not in use - they have been known to catch fire if left on for long periods and the fluid level allowed to drop. Dealt with a few in the past (called Hydrovane) that did just that....

Can't really add much except to say I've had the SGS 50l direct drive compressor for the last five years. It's noisy, like don't-use-before-8am noisy, but for £165 it's been a worthwhile purchase.

Used it a few times to seat motorcycle and mountain bike tyres. For the MTB tyres, I use a Presta/Schrader adapter which cost £3 from Amazon with the SGS gun. As you'd imagine, the gauge on the gun is not accurate which is likely why you're buying the Park Tool jobbie.

With hindsight, I could probably have got away with the 24l one but I had grand ideas of re-spraying fairing panels (it was during Covid)...
