I knew I was gonna spell that wrong !!! And no ! I have enough confusion with the few things I do understand !!Horse wrote: Sun May 18, 2025 1:40 pm'Furlongs'Noggin wrote: Sun May 18, 2025 1:31 pmBlimey - can't imagine why money was decimalised![]()

I mean, if you grew up with that system, it kinda makes sense (like inches, feet, yards, furloughs and miles !!! ) - but it makes no sense to look at from a decimal point of view !!
I nearly gave my physio heart failure from laughing when I was explaining feet and inches - I didn't get to yards & furloughs, but you should have seen his reaction when I explained that we measured horses in hands![]()

Then have a look for rod, pole, chain, perch, etc.![]()
It's a bit weird though, only because I never had to do stuff in my head in old money - but when I started bar work, we did it all in our heads. I could add up a round whilst chatting to various punters and manage to give correct change ( even if they gave me a big note and the oddses - which confuses anyone at a modern till !). Extra weird that computers convert to 2's !! I know they operate in 2's, but stillMr. Dazzle wrote: Sun May 18, 2025 1:47 pmTBF the old system does make more sense if your doing it all in your head, because things divide/multiply by 2, 6 and 12 much more readily than they do into 10.
Decimal makes far more sense for electronic money though. Ironically though the first thing computers do is convert it into base 2.
I guess if I'd actually learned it all, the old way would have been ok. I do use feet and inches, but not yards, for measuring ( dressmaking/diy ) although I do have to convert stuff to cms to go to a shop to buy stuff !! I can also generally convert inches to cms cos a 12 school ruler is 30cms - it's not exact, but it does for what I need !!
I say miles, but have never been able to judge how far a mile is! I have just about learnt to judge a rough kilometre, so that works better for me now - probably a good thing cos you know, where I live is metric
