And a guinea is 21 shillings
Blimey - can't imagine why money was decimalised

I mean, if you grew up with that system, it kinda makes sense (like inches, feet, yards, furloughs and miles !!! ) - but it makes no sense to look at from a decimal point of view !!

I nearly gave my physio heart failure from laughing when I was explaining feet and inches - I didn't get to yards & furloughs, but you should have seen his reaction when I explained that we measured horses in hands
'Furlongs' ;)

Then have a look for rod, pole, chain, perch, etc. :D
I knew I was gonna spell that wrong !!! And no ! I have enough confusion with the few things I do understand !!

TBF the old system does make more sense if your doing it all in your head, because things divide/multiply by 2, 6 and 12 much more readily than they do into 10.

Decimal makes far more sense for electronic money though. Ironically though the first thing computers do is convert it into base 2.
It's a bit weird though, only because I never had to do stuff in my head in old money - but when I started bar work, we did it all in our heads. I could add up a round whilst chatting to various punters and manage to give correct change ( even if they gave me a big note and the oddses - which confuses anyone at a modern till !). Extra weird that computers convert to 2's !! I know they operate in 2's, but still

I guess if I'd actually learned it all, the old way would have been ok. I do use feet and inches, but not yards, for measuring ( dressmaking/diy ) although I do have to convert stuff to cms to go to a shop to buy stuff !! I can also generally convert inches to cms cos a 12 school ruler is 30cms - it's not exact, but it does for what I need !!

I say miles, but have never been able to judge how far a mile is! I have just about learnt to judge a rough kilometre, so that works better for me now - probably a good thing cos you know, where I live is metric

I was amusing myself with the thought of a horse race commentator telling us that the horse was a furlough adrift at the back of the field and taking a vacation. :D

I was looking into this the other day actually, doing decimals in binary is reality hard.

They say there are 10 types of people.

Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Poor obs on my part obviously, but I suspect I've been photographed on the way home from Devon. Crafty so and so was hiding in shade caused by foliage on an over bridge on the A361. Two and a bit week wait now.

Five weeks after surgery for dupuytren's contracture the finger, although still swollen, is starting to bend back. Another two weeks until I see the surgeon again but my plan of buying a bike isn't looking good.

Bureaucracy and systems

The health system has my correct first name on my carte vitale and on their web page etc but in the back of the system it has my old name :angry-cussingblack: So when I print my Attestation des Droits, its not in the correct name :angry-cussingblack: :angry-cussingblack:

Gonna have to take the incorrect one down as it is today and then write to the office of the Health thingy to request they change it to the correct name to prevent this in the future - not gonna be quick if other departments are anything to go by

Not insignificant, but here goes...

My step dad. He is a cunt. Sorry to drop the c-bomb, but he is a narcissistic, self-absorbed twat and a bully. We've never seen eye-to-eye but I figured many years ago that if I wanted to stay close to my mum I'd have to tolerate him, so that's what I do. Barely, at times.

We went there for to Sunday lunch, along with my sister and her husband. My mum told me she needs cataract surgery in a few weeks time. After dinner, whilst out of earshot, he rolls his eyes and complains about what an inconvenience it'll be to have to drop her off and pick her up again, as it's all the way over in Canterbury. WTF? It's your fucking wife, who is 82 and having eye surgery. And you're complaining about driving her there?! I looked at him and dryly asked why he didn't just give her the bus fare and let her make her own way there and back. My rapier-sharp sarcasm went over his head...

Had a chat with my mum in the kitchen, out of earshot of my step dad and she told me some other stuff that had been said during a recent argument that made my piss boil. What saddens me is that she confessed to my niece a while ago that she has never really loved him, even though she's been married to the twat for 40+ years. What a wasted life.

My former employer…

The company only reimburses business mileage at 19p per mile where HMRC allows 45p for the first 10,000 miles and a reduced rate thereafter.

Within my PAYE expenses claim for 2023/24, I put a claim into HMRC for tax relief on around 2500 miles for the difference between 45p and 19p. HMRC challenged the claim wanting a copy of my mileage log showing amount of miles and rate reimbursed which I duly supplied.

This wasn’t sufficient for HMRC, who requested proof from said former employer which I requested last week, to be supplied in the form of a letter confirming number of miles, amount paid per mile and total paid, all simple enough, or so you’d think…

Today a spreadsheet arrived, the same data extract I’d previous sent to HMRC.

So, I re-sent the request with a copy of the letter from HMRC, outlining exactly what they were asking for. Response was “we’ve supplied the data you requested, look at columns (I) and (J) for the information you are looking for”. Followed by “feel free to manipulate the data as you see fit”.

Fucker!

Ive spoken with HMRC who said the email chain and data should be enough.

Got home about 7pm -

- spilled salad all over the cooker (no work surface so was balancing a chopping board on the cooker! )

- realised that although I turned the dial on the washing machine to the cycle I wanted, I didn't push start before I left

- knocked over a glass with water and lemon juice soaking my trews and top, breaking the glass and getting my laptop wet

- found out that the freezer compartment in the fridge that was already in the apartment doesn't always freeze FFS

So, now I've eaten my tea, I think I should go to bed before anything else goes wrong

Mind you, I'm getting up at 5am, so now is probably a good time anyway! Avoiding more disasters/issues is a bonus

Came home to find and almost perfectly bisected half mouse on the dining room floor.

Really hope the other half is inside one of my cats.

Our one just walked in very pleased with herself, with a fatally wounded blue-tit which she promptly dropped into the rug.

I had to get a live one out from under the fire last night, looked like it had escaped it's captor by losing half it's tail.

She caught a starling yesterday, and the day before. Dunno what's gotten into her, she's been a beast this week. She clearly woke up with murder on her mind yesterday, not 10 minutes elapsed between being asleep on the sofa and bringing in a very much alive Starling.

My Jack Russell put a dead mouse she'd killed next to my wife one evening. She sat in front of my wife looking at her and the dead mouse in turn. My wife thought it was a toy and went to pick it up throw it for her and shrieked nad jumped about 4 foot in the air when she saw what it was! :D

Few weeks back a faulty ATM ate my debit card.

Wasn't a problem, froze the card using the app and ordered a new one that arrived a few days later. Android pay still worked, who knew that the phone gets a slightly different card number to your physical card.

Anyways...

I want to put some credit in my Lotto account, it fails. It's got the old card details.

No problem, I'll put the new card in... "Sorry you can't change card details with credit in your account" I've got £1.90 in it.

Try to refund the £1.90... of course you can only refund to a debit card... the one they hold details for ... which is cancelled!

The webchat is down too, I might have to call the bastards.
