My wife got a pair of readers also (What were fine) Bloody hell you cant leave these out in the sun. Looks like the jam jar bottoms might start a fireNoggin wrote: Fri Dec 13, 2024 9:50 pmYou do need to be really specific with Specsavers. Mind you, when they were doing the test to work out my reading distance I was told I wasn’t reading at the ‘correct’ distance - my arms aren’t long enough to hold a book up for any length of time at the ‘correct’ distanceFelix wrote: Fri Dec 13, 2024 6:45 pm Specsavers. Went 7 years ago and got glasses for the first time. Got home and they were shit. Fine reading the card they give you to read but two foot or more (Laptop distance) was a blurry mess. Had to take them back and get tested again and another set of glasses. 2.5 years later, no change in the prescription. 2.5 years later (Last week) apparently my prescription has now changed after being tested. Today got my glasses and read a few things and they seem fine. Got home and cat see my laptop. I have better over the counter glasses.. When I pointed that out, she still told me I wasn’t reading at wrong FFS!!!

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
If you're going back, measure the distance that you normally use the laptop at (eye to screen) before you go or take the laptop with you!
Ready readers are all designed for a focal point at roughly the same distance which usually means you have to lean in to a computer screen if you try working in readers. Doesn't bother some but it's probably bad for your posture. People used to worry about screen radiation too but dunno if that all went away with LED screens.
(I made a mistake with my computer/craft specs and scrimped on the frames and they're too heavy so I'm constantly pushing 'em back up my schnoz
I really should go and get the lenses put in better frames but I use the laptop less and less and a tablet more and more - and that's held at book distance).

Well old school CRTs are literally particle accelerators, albeit pretty dinky ones. So yeah they genuinely do make radiation if only very small amounts. Flat screens work on a different principle, so no radiation involved.Count Steer wrote: Sat Dec 14, 2024 7:47 am People used to worry about screen radiation too but dunno if that all went away with LED screens.
Re: Glasses though....go to a decent independent opticians is my advice! Specsavers are franchises so they can be hit and miss, some of them are actually pretty good (basically the ones which used to be little independents) whereas some are just sausage factories.
I switched to a local independent a few years ago for esoteric reasons related to the keratoconus I mentioned above. Waaay better though IME.

Specsavers. They made up the wrong prescription. They gave me Readers where computer use ones were ordered. Lucky i never put my old pair in the recycle tub.

Drivers that cut corners in the face of an oncoming bus/Sprinter/bigger vehicle!! FFS, too close too many times to having someone take out my front wing!!
I am really really careful not to go over the centre line - shame car drivers don't take the same care

It's a Fronch thing innit, I've never seen as many corners cut as when I was driving my Moho over there.Noggin wrote: Thu Dec 19, 2024 4:19 pm Drivers that cut corners in the face of an oncoming bus/Sprinter/bigger vehicle!! Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
It most definitely is. It's like they've never learned to go 'around' corners!! I've completely adjusted my biking to take that into account, but there's not a lot of space to adjust a bus, the Sprinters, yes I could probably go a bit further over, but I'm already my side of the line and really don't want to risk scraping the side of it just to accept the fukkers that straightline all the bends!! Difficult decision - tell the boss I scraped all down the side because someone cut the corner, but how do I prove that. Or let some fuckwit take out the front wing and be able to show proof!!KungFooBob wrote: Thu Dec 19, 2024 4:32 pmIt's a Fronch thing innit, I've never seen as many corners cut as when I was driving my Moho over there.Noggin wrote: Thu Dec 19, 2024 4:19 pm Drivers that cut corners in the face of an oncoming bus/Sprinter/bigger vehicle!! Boss it! It sounds like you're driving like you're the most vulnerable.
Adjusting? Pah....claim the corner and give 'em a 'C'mon, if you think yer 'ard enough' look. I bet the lorry drivers don't worry about scraping a few casualties off the bodywork.

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
My younger brother and I have always rubbed along ok.
He has a wonderful son who's an officer in the Navy. They've always been very close
And I've always been very close to my nephew through his love for bikes.
At his wedding 3 years ago, the 3 of us were like magic. I was so happy.
They had a baby 4 months ago, but my brother hardly mentioned it.
I've asked a few questions but they've been swerved.
So today I asked if there was a problem.
The silence was deafening.
I'm so shocked it's hard to believe.
I can't interfere, but feel helpless. Fuck.

@Yorick you can only let them know you're there if they need you.
And just knowing that may help them, knowing that someone cares about them.

I'm getting shit in work for doing just that.Count Steer wrote: Thu Dec 19, 2024 5:20 pm I bet the lorry drivers don't worry about scraping a few casualties off the bodywork.
Our work thinks it's entirely acceptable to have HGVs delivering jiffy bags to private addresses up farm lanes. As a result the lorry can get a few batterings. I clipped a double parked car during the week and I'm due to have an "intervention" about my driving. Fair and square I clipped the car, but because a van took my mirror off on my side of the road, and I cracked the step of the lorry going down a lane I already told the boss the truck wouldn't fit down, they're having a fit. Another driver takes out three cars in a car park because he's perving on women eating lunch in the sun and nothing is said.
They've fucked themselves though, I'm due to pick up a load of stuff at the arse end of Fermanagh before 11am on Monday as it's air freight and time sensitive.
My meeting is at 9am, so unless the truck can stop time, it's not getting lifted in time. Oh dear, how sad, Never mind.

New borns can bring a lot of strain into inter family relationships. It's common to see both grandmothers trying to assert dominance and 'fighting' over who sees the baby the most. It's not hard to see how a family fall out can result. The wife's mother will usually be the favourite, but factors like geography will also play a part.Yorick wrote: Sat Dec 21, 2024 8:55 pm My younger brother and I have always rubbed along ok.

One of Mrs.Skub's pals became a grandmother a while back, she sold her home here and moved to Scotland to be near the grandchild, but the other grandmother is still favoured. Now she realises she's isolated herself from her friends and social circle, plus she didn't get what she wanted either. Lose/lose.
People lose the run of themselves over grandweans. I'd stay well out of it and let matters settle.

So my brother and nephew is the only family I have.
Been thinking, and looking back, something before the baby came stands out as maybe first sign of a rift ??
Brother came for visit 18 months ago and something was upsetting him.
And his girlfriend and nephew's wife seem to be OK as g/f was telling Pen how pretty the baby was. So has photos.
I'm just thinking out loud really.
