I agree - I was hoping for something a little more like this:
It might not be perfect but I'm struggling to see much that I don't like with that, it's the bike I would have drooled over in the early 90's, except it's almost certainly going to be a better bike than anything available in the early 90's.
I keep looking at TZRs and TZ250s but that time for me has passed by, but this might be the ticket.

I'll be going right past my local Yamaha place later this week, I think I'll call in for a brew and see when they reckon these might appear.
My mate called me last week and said he's very tempted to buy the RD500 looking one ready for spring next year, so if he buys that then I'll have a riding buddy again and he's gearing up for retirement at the same time as me, so in that case I'll be very tempted to put my money down on one of these GPs.

Even if I don't ride it much I'll be just as happy having that as an ornament in our annex as I would riding it.
How about this, it's way cool.

I do like that, apart from the tail piece/seat unit.

That's shockingly horrible.

Plus I wouldn't buy anything out of the Japanese auctions these days, everything that comes out is bent or knackered, everything I've seen over the last few years is stuff that they can't register themselves because it's been written off, so they bung it through the auctions to export it.
The good bikes are mostly staying in Japan now.

You can still go into a shop, do deal on a decent bike and then ship it, like my mates brother did with my TZR, but that's expensive.
Any of these recent imports needing work on ebay that have come out of the auctions probably have bent chassis, otherwise they'd be getting sold in Japanese bike shops.

I went in today and sat on a LE XSR900, the one done up in blue Gauloises colours, can't remember ever sitting on one before, and it felt pretty good actually, good seat height, quality components, good riding position but surprisingly I felt like it needed slightly lower bars to put a bit more weight over the front end, it feels very solid so you need that front end confidence to load it up in a bend.
The RD500 one with full fairing felt the same, very nice and well put together, but the bars need to be lower.

They do seem to be very well made, the running gear seems to feel better quality than the budget Ducati bikes I've tested.

The young sales fella said that Yamaha have officially communicated with them about this particular model and they are definitely confirmed to be going into production and delivery has been suggested in April, but that's not 100% and he doesn't know the price yet.
I asked about securing one and he said he wouldn't even take a deposit off me yet until he knows more.

I'll be making one of my infrequent visits to the NEC bike show just to get a good look at the XSR900 variants and grill the Yamaha stand people about them. The thought occured to me that the letter box headlight on the GP model could be greatly improved by providing a colour matched blanking plate to cover over the headlight and give the psuedo GP bike look. The plate would need to sit in a recess so that the overall finish was flush, of course.

Just seen the list price of the XSR900GP lower fairing/belly pan - £623. To my mind that should be fitted as OE.

Blimey.
I'd try and do a deal to have that thrown in or discounted.

I'm also off the NEC to see this bike, just spoke to a couple of mates and it was EICMA or the NEC and the NEC is the least hassle.
I forgot to suggest we stay in the hotel next to the motorcycle museum and do that the evening before.

I'm looking forward to getting a sit on this GP version and unless the ergonomics really don't suit me then I think I'll end up buying one, it's the first bike I've been keen on for ages.

I was looking at what you get on the CB1000R+ compared with the CB1000R, the radiator guard / grill thing is about £320, it's a bit of stamped aluminium sheet with some holes and a CB1000R logo.

The crap one, or should I say the one that doesn't fit full width with the upper fairing. It's a single piece unit and I found it on an official Yamaha site.

Yes, I like the look of it as well, but want to see it in the flesh. Probably just catch the train to The NEC on the day. It's less than an hour from my place in Stafford.

Just read the lower fairing on the GP bike is an official Yamaha accessory. That's taking the piss in my book. 👎

You'd hate the MT then, about 2 inches higher. It's longer than the MT, uses the Tracer 9 swingarm. I'm thinking of test riding one (normal XSR)

I haven't had a go on the road but I sat on the normal one (the YPVS styled one) and it felt pretty good, I was expecting it to feel budget but it doesn't and I was genuinely impressed with it in the flesh, it looks and feels well made and feels like it would be fun.
I'm hoping the GP version gives it just enough sporty feeling to make it feel sporty, but not too sporty for old men with bad backs

Looks like they have carried over these colours to the 2024 XSR900. The blue is now no longer an option.

That's a (poor) copy of the RD350N1.

It's my favourite YPVS but it doesn't look right on that XSR, the forks, frame and seat unit all look wrong - maybe silver frame, black forks and a proper seat unit and it'd look ok.
