The Bonneville doesn't have a rev limiter OR a proper rev counter....the dial is plus/minus 3000rpm at the moment :D

Rev limit is determined by testicular fortitude on that bike.

That's a question of opinion. Give me a choice of his proper bike or a 1290 Superduke on track, i know which i'm picking.

There're two ways to make something feel exciting and fast though.

One is to have no grip and terrible brakes :D

Seriously though...I would love to track the Bonnie. Its got rearsets, clip ons and a close ratio box. It gets up to 90mph easily enough too, I imagine it wouldn't be too far away from a 390. The brakes might not fair so well and the skinny tyres ain't too clever either. But it did begin its life as a race bike.

Within reason you're allowed to ride whatever bike you want... as long as it's not dangerous. No Limits for example don't allow 125s due to the difference in closing speeds. But a bike that can do 100mph isn't an issue, my 690 wasn't much more and the 390 KTMs are around that mark on a very good day. So as long as it goes and stops and works, i'm not seeing an issue.

People do get hung up on trackdays of 'faster is better' and that's not what it's all about for all riders, sometimes it's just about riding an iconic bike on track and enjoying it and there's NOTHING at all wrong with that.

I very much doubt it would pass noise regs, it's got zero silencing.

It also very much doubt Mrs D would approve, it's actually her bike :D

This

I loved tracking the Bird, the TLs and the 10r. But damn if I didn't have the BEST fun on the 390!!

There was zero fear involved. I could ride it to it's limit before I hit mine!! (Ok, it hit the rev limiter a lot - I guess that someone else could do more on it, but I could do everything I wanted without that bit of fear waiting to hit me!!)

Bloody AWESOME fun :banana-wrench: :banana-wrench: :banana-wrench: :banana-wrench:
Life is for living. Buy the shoes. Eat the cake. Ride the bikes. Just, ride the bikes!! :bblonde:

I have no concerns about the Bonneville being suitable for the track. As above, it was built as a race bike and IME it's not slow by any means. It'd be more of a handful for sure, but not dangerous.

My concern is much more serious - it was Mrs. D's Dad's bike for nearly 50 years and it's a priceless family heirloom :D

you're married and you'd only be doing exactly what it was built for.... whether she'd understand that or not i dunno.

But i'm in a much easier position to discuss what is or isn't allowed on track as my missus rides on circuit.

At Cadwell Classic Bike Trackday 2019 there was a bloke on an old British bike out in our group (slowest) I'm not sure what it was, but it was a twin cylinder road bike, either BSA or Triumph, he came round the outside of me on the exit of Charlies and I followed him round Park and the Gooseneck, he lost me at the chicane after Mansfield as I can't get my head round that chicane, anyway he was slow on Park Straight, but on the corners you could see the frame flexing and going everywhere, it was great to watch, saw him in the pits afterwards and he had a massive grin.

Old twin shock shonkers can be fun on track even if they only do 100 mph

My brother on a CB500X, the brakes on the Enfield cooked so I couldn’t touch him on them but luckily I had another 5 mph top end. Tbh he was pushing a bit hard on the standard trail type tyres and eventually lost the front at Charlie’s 2 but stayed on and took to the grass 🤣

Never really thought about that. Might limit my plans to use the missus’ GSXS-125 as a track bike if she progresses to her full licence.

We can certainly get Alan's thoughts on it.

Even in the novice group, there'd be 80mph differences in speed on the straights.
And a 125 at full speed would hold folk up in the corners.

Thanks mate but it’s really only idle thoughts. I’ve never sold a bike and can’t see me having the impetus to sell hers if she does progress. Also minded to keep it in case the kids want to ride when they get old enough.

Fairly sure I go just as slow round corners on a bigger bike. ;)

I would love to just say yes to this but at the moment i am looking at a minimum of 5 months with no income from the instructing gig and just the pension to cover mortgage and all bills etc so things are a bit tighter than i would like. Will look again in a couple of months if i get back to work in any form and it also depends what the Portimao situation is :wtf:
