Wouldn't a more pertinent question be "Why didn't you buy an auto?" if a manual and a DCT version were available of a bike you wanted - you'd have to be very strange to buy a manual car when there's a flappy paddle version of it.

Pretty impressed with my flappy paddle car. If DCT bikes are anything like (it does stuff like automatically dropping gears on downhill bits for engine braking) I'd be a  too.

(I get a bit :( now in an auto without paddles - which mainly get used for dropping down the gears when you go down one hill, then up another because sometimes it's a bit slow to do it and feels a bit laboured, otherwise it's quite smart).

I do prefer an auto in a car, especially a half modern one.

Mine dis-engages the drive if you throttle off over 40mph (when in Eco mode), it coasts forever and does wonders for the MPG.

But my car is a tool, I'm not sure I want to remove part of the riding experience on the bike I use as a toy. May I should get a ride on a dct bike and have my perception changed.

I thought that till I tried the latest one and bought it, I’ve still got a gear lever if needed 😃

My current car is my first auto. I wouldn't go back to manual for my day-to-day, given the choice.

I drove a car with DSG at the weekend. It provides engine braking.

If selected appropriate gears, every time, and changes were swift and smooth. I can't think of a good reason to do it manually.

We've got an auto bmw. Honda DCT isn't even vaguely the same.

My car selects gears (or indeed lack of, it sometimes turns the engine off), in part, based on the sat nav and also cameras reading the road ahead.

It really is bloody clever! Not so good if you're out driving for the sake of driving though :D

It's a slush box epicyclic, but that's not really relevant.

Your beemer almost certainly has a torque convertor + epicycle box. Horse mentioned DSG, which is VW's version of DCT. Perhaps should be the other way around, DCT is Honda's version of DSG 'cause VW did it first :D 20 years ago now, come to think of it! I still think of it as new. Conceptually they all work in the same way (DSG, DCT, Porsche PDK yada yada), the only significant difference is in the choice of programming about when to change gear etc.

AFAIK the tech came from F1 in the late 90s, but weirdly the F1 teams never actually bothered with the second clutch. They were going to, but then they realised with clever control and modelling they could retain just the one clutch but keep all the doubled up 1-3-5 and 2-4-6 selector gubbins etc. They can, however briefly, be in two gears at once and cope with it.

Sure, I know. Some people are mentioning auto cars, it's not comparable.

This newfangled technology, eh?

Not many chain drive cars about.

Because it's not an automatic gearbox, we're three pages in and it's been covered in some detail .

I don't regret buying this bike but I'm starting to regret starting this thread.

Give it another 5 posts and it'll be about Brexit and/or US politics.

That distinction is blurred at best :D. The kind of gearbox in your bike is no different to the kind in plenty of cars billed as "auto".

If you ain't gotta change gears yourself, it's an auto innit?

I change gears myself with it, I don't use the auto modes, mentioned this a page or so back.

Why have some of you come to this thread to argue with me about my choice of bike? Fuck off with you all, I don't care if you want an auto or don't, start your own thread
