I used to work with engineers developing world-leading tv special effects and editing equipment.

Guess what a couple of them didn't even own ... ?

I work as an Engineer for an automotive OEM. There are cars out there on the road today with bits on that I designed. Right now, I'm working on cars technology for the late 2020s. I have a degree in Automotive Engineering.

I'm still not sure which side is the offside

I've never heard anyone in this bizz call it anything other than "left" and "right" :D
Opposite to the nearside, derrr

Nearside = near to the kerb
Yeah I know that in the same way I know that the 5/8" spanner is bigger than the 19/32",
It is? I still can't do that shit on my head, when I'm spannering the JAPton i just grab a handful of imperials and try them until i find the one that fits.

You equate nearside with underside?

Dude, that explains so much.

It is an MOT fail to have anything attached to your windscreen in the main viewing area.
That includes dash cams and phone holders

I worked with mechanical engineer on a project. Had to show him how to use ring and open spanners to do up nits and bolts ...

He's now a 'principal engineer' in the motor industry :)

They're extremely dangerous.

Riding downhill towards a roundabout. Oncoming car has 'Dick' on the windscreen.

Thought "If that was my name, I wouldn't put it on the screen. Wonder what his girlfriend's name is?"

Fanny

Laughing so much I nearly didn't get around the island :)

I've met - and helped - quite a lot of graduate engineers who don't really know how to use spanners and stuff like that to be fair.

It's easy to laugh and say they can't possibly know much about Engineering, but loads of young people come to the subject via Maths, Physics, stuff like that. Or even just because they got pushed by their parents into having "a proper job".

If you grew up with your Dad fixing motorbikes or whatever it's only natural that you'd think everyone who's into the subject got into it that way, but they didn't.

Engineering, same root as the word "Ingenuity" and not restricted to spanners :D

I haven't got a scooby doo how to use a lathe or a mill, but I hold more than one patent on manufacturing technologies.

Yup, I work in IT at a dock, I'm not interested in computers, ships, containers, cranes or any of the other shit I work with, it's why they have to pay me to do it.

Yes, but that is a different side when working on rhd and lhd cars.

Surely in the UK the kerb is always on the left of the car regardless of where the steering wheel is?

Worked with people like that, some were fucking clueless. Their rise to the top was amazing.

One employer allowed us to play with our cars, even design and make new parts for our cars which the company could sell with a kick back to the designer. All stopped tho wih new management.

Yes in all seriousness, this is why manufacturers (and me :D ) speak in terms of left and right. Odd part numbers for left, even for right  Often they don't even draw the RHS part and it just says "mirror of XXX".
