Re: Bikes from different markets...
BMWs in the USA used to have 3 year warranty, when UK bikes were 1 year.
Oh what fun to be had on their stand at the bike show, asking whether it was possible to buy one to US spec as they must be better built

Be nice if it were, but it's a couple of kg under a 250 ninja already, so I don't think it *needs* to.
24kg heavier than my cb300r, but it has an extra cylinder and 15hp odd more.

Isn't that just a sleeved down cbr1000f for the USA market? I don't see any significant difference to the thousand anyway.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Fri Jan 01, 2021 9:47 pm The nips did a CBR750 back in the day too.

My mate still has one I think, he had it as a work hack and used it every day in all weathers for years and years, he said it was ace.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Fri Jan 01, 2021 9:47 pm The nips did a CBR750 back in the day too.

When he sold all his other bikes (due to illness) he kept the CBR, couldn't bear to part with it, but I haven't talked to him about bikes for ages.

Yeah but look at it from the bigger bike perspective. a mid 90's Ducati 900ss is 10 kg heavier but has just under 80bhp. If you're not getting feather weight, you might as well have some horse power. The CBR250RR is twice the weight of a MotoGP bikeA_morti wrote: ↑Sat Jan 02, 2021 5:12 amBe nice if it were, but it's a couple of kg under a 250 ninja already, so I don't think it *needs* to.

Yeh... but nah.
The 900ss was 180kg dry. Quoted curb weights seem to be from 192kg-194kg, so it's 25kg heavier than the honda, not 10kg.
The 'more bhp' achievement isn't that impressive either, since the 250 has @165hp/litre while the 900ss is around half that.

Re: Bikes from different markets...
165 bhp per litre is great but needs to be in a lightweight package for it to give real performance. its still only 42bhp. I'd still go for the relatively lightweight bigger capacity twin as its got different attributes
The modern answer is of course, KTM's 390. It pushes out around 42bhp, not a lot over 100bhp per litre but its only 149kg dry (allegedly) and with a motor that's got a much more friendly torque curve.
Were the Jap 250cc models just smaller bore versions of the JDM 400cc bikes?

The old CBRs back in the day were sort of that. Plus a different swing arm, single disc front end, lighter / narrower wheels etc., But basically the same animal.
That's not a bad thing though. They were all phenomenal in terms of tech for the day, and you got all that all packed into a 250cc bike for licensing reasons only. Much like the zx25r of today.

The 90s 250s were all separate from the 400s, the wee Honda especially was a gorgeous thing that redlined at 19k. I'm pretty sure they all had twin discs too. The budget stuff was the suspension, it was all basically set up from the factory for a 9yo girl.A_morti wrote: ↑Sat Jan 02, 2021 9:36 pmThe old CBRs back in the day were sort of that. I rode the Honda back when I had an RGV and was like comparing Champagne to Lambrini. The RGV was better in every department.
