Mustang here too. Fuel consumption has always been the killer wherever I've thought about it properly.

I'd also quite like an R8. I loved my TT, so they feel like an upgraded version 🤣

If I could only have one car it would be our Range Rover L322 4.4L.
It's 23yrs old now and worth about £3k, but it's the perfect car for British roads, it's incredibly comfortable to drive and perfect for us. Our other cars could come and go but the L322 stays, forever.

If the roads were fixed and the UK public weren't so nasty about people having nice cars then I'd have an 812 Compitizione with full Novitec kit.
The sound of a V12 is nice and it's suitably stupid enough that you could genuinely tick the box as the insane purchase of your lifetime and you'd never need anything more ridiculous to say you've touched the heights of motoring lunacy.
Then sell it and use the Range Rover.

Right now it would be a whole bunch of compromises.

I want something I can do the winter commute of 6 miles to work in, so ideally petrol. Good load space, would be great if I could get my Himalayan in the back, even if I have to use one of those trolley wheels.

Auto would be preferable so wife will share driving to France, oh and it needs to be able to do 40 mpg on the motorway.

Closest I've seen is a Caddy Maxi with a wheelchair ramp conversion. This limits me to the 1.4 tsi which gets a bit greedy over 65mph and there's plenty of road noise comes through after the conversion has been done.

Well with less than 200 miles under my belt so far this year its looking like my annual driving milage is going to be under 1k, so I could hang MPG figures and go for something either outrageous or exotic and fragile.

But cars do sod all for me, just appliances with wheels, so I'll stick to my 14 year old diesel civic that's guaranteed to start every time no matter how long I leave it neglected on the driveway

I was a Dyane man, and when I wanted a bit of luxury, I moved on to the Ami 8

Cars don't particularly excite me and this is probably why I like the leccy car when other complain that they're dull too drive.

And so to answer the question, it would have to be a 3ltr Capri or go faster souped up MK2 Escort

That has my interest, I bet the good ones don't come up for sale.

I'm really happy with my 18 year old Mitsubishi Lancer, it's just getting a bit old now with 140,000 miles on it, if I could have another low mileage one I'd be happy

TLDR - but if you're interested in a 2003-2010 Range Rover then read on...

Mine was a very fortunate accident, I was walking to get a newspaper and passed a dark blue Range Rover with a "For Sale" poster in it, no price, no details, so I knocked on and the short version of the story was that a young bloke (from a wealthy family) had been bought this Range Rover on a whim and then when they got home they found they couldn't get him insured, so they put it up for sale and it had had no interest for months.

I thanked them, but said my limit would probably insult them, so I went to walk away, but they called me back and asked me to make an offer, lots of "but I don't want to waste your time with an insulting offer" and then in the end I just threw an insulting number out, way less than half what it was worth, probably less than a third actually - and they accepted on the spot.
I immediately assumed something was wrong with it, they ripped my arm off and couldn't get it out of the drive fast enough, but again long story short is it was in fabulous condition, one previous elderly owner. I had a specialist do a full service and look it over and he said it was mint and offered to buy it.

It is by far the best road car for the UK roads, Clarkson and Harry Metcalfe have the exact same model as daily drivers and won't sell them - IYKYK sort of thing.
Mine has the 4.4L BMW engine and it's been faultless, it costs me about £150 a year for a service.
(FWIW though I tried to put my 22yr old on the insurance and it went from £350 a year to £5000-something :wtf: )

I intend to keep it forever, it's become one of those cars that the whole family love and has become like a family dog.
If I took it to our specialist and he told me it needed £25k spending on it to last another twenty years then I'd pay it, because I can't imagine what else I could buy under £30k that would be anywhere near as good, luxurious and just simply very nice to drive on UK roads.

It's also very anonymous, I could be a king or a pauper, our other cars get noticed because of what they are, but this doesn't.

You've got to be realistic though, brand new they were £100k+ top of the range vehicles and if you do unfortunately have a big maintenance issue then I imagine it could quite easily throw up a £10k bill, so as long as you bear that in mind, you'll be fine.

It is the epitome of the perfect solution for getting around in the UK on the potholed roads in any type of weather or conditions.
You'd get a very nice one for ten grand, a decent one for half that, and a reasonable chance of a decent enough one for a couple of grand, although the above caveat about potential big bills has to be considered.

Having had three that's very optimistic in terms of engine longevity :)

Most likely a Skoda Superb with Auto gearbox this time around. I have a 1.4l Six speed manual and love it, but the auto gets better economy with the newer engines and they are so comfortable and of such a good size. So a new Superb would do me nicely. My 2013 model is still going nicely, but is getting a bit battered at the edges, has had a just about complete suspension rebuild and new discs/pads all round. Still works well, so no complaints.

Not at all, they were fantastic... as long as you remember that the engine is a service item
