Often, speaking not very well is appreciated as much or more than being fluent :)
I managed, today, during a phone call to France, to explain, in French, that I did not speak French and would be grateful if I could be transferred to an operator who could speak English.

When I say 'in French', it was almost worthy of Allo Allo, but the message was understood :)

An operator? A telephone operator? Are you sure it was France and not the 1960s?

It was UPS and what I actually wanted to say was:

"YA BASTIDS SEND MY FUGGIN PARCEL THAT YOU SAID WAS GOING TO BE DELIVERED IN THE UK FUGGIN YESTERDAY INSTEAD IT'S STUCK IN A FUGGIN DEPOT IN FUGGIN TOULOUSE AND WHY DOESN'T THE FUGGIN TRACKING NUMBER WORK ON YOUR FUGGIN WEBSITE NOT THAT IT EVEN ACTUALLY SAYS THAT'S THE FUGGIN TRACKING FUGGIN NUMBER ON THE FUGGIN PAPERWORK YOU FUGGIN EMAILED ME!"

But, I was calm and patient and waited for someone who almost understood my calm description, in English.

UPS are what you could call a global company. They have a fleet of aircraft and serve more than 220 countries apparently.

But the wankers, who have an office/depot in Marmaris, refuse to deliver packages that may have come from halfway around the world, the 20 kms to this village. I'm guessing that other villages in the area are also 'outside our service area'.

A worldwide delivery company that doesn't deliver.

You may find 'putain' a useful addition to your vocabulaire.

When out there last week it was bad enough the number of conversations where, mid-stream of swift French, I could pick out the words "prime minister" :(

So I'm hardly going to start talking about Russia.

'Putain de bordel de merde' seems to work well. I was commended on my 'bon vocabulaire, monsieur' on one occasion I used the phrase.

Over the years I've been told it means

Fuck
or
Prostitute
or
It's a just a kinda generic vulgar word of disgust

All what the teacher said. It's used for things like damn, sod it, fuck, shit, bugger. Slightly too strong for 'polite' company but mostly accepted as the norm

They do also use Merde. Putain is a bit stronger I was told. But used a LOT (as you'll know)

Direct translation is a prostitute. So, not to be used as a personal insult without that knowledge!!

A french friend sent me this years ago -

Skip divers make me very happy. They must have emptied it by a third! I can chuck a load more shit from behind the shed now! A 4 yard skip has become a 6 yarder! :D

I think it translates slightly stronger than it's general usage iyswim.

When I arrived I was surprised how many little kids in my son's football teams used it pretty much as punctuation, so I assume it's no worse than the 'shit' or 'bollocks' british alternative.

Totally. When I asked about it in class, the teacher looked a bit shocked  (She's a similar age, so I was surprised at the shock!). But she did say it's a general word like you say. BUT, that does depend a bit on the 'group' you are talking to. Old more traditional French won't be so keen/might be shocked or offended. But in the area I am, everyone seems to use it almost like punctuation.

Although I think it's the tone and forcefulness of how you say it that can change how 'seriously' it is meant/taken

It would serve to replace his 'fuggin', n'est-ce pas?
