If the buyer electronically transfers the agreed amount into your account, that's a done deal, that money can't be taken back without the buyer going to his bank saying he made a mistake. His bank will then approach your bank and your bank will contact you. The paid sum can not be given back without your consent.
So if he pays the dough, the deal is a goer. The buyer is the one at risk then,as you could disappear with the bike.

If he transfers the money you can call your bank and get them to confirm it's genuine and secure. I really can't see an issue then.

I sold my old 200SX S13 to some lads who came over from Ireland. They hadn't seen it and turned up with the money and it was all fine.

I took lots of pics for the add, but he's not seen the bike in the flesh, which is apparently the MO of your typical scammer, but I can't see the angle?

Maybe he just really wants it?
I sold 2 of my previous GSXRs after the buyer paid cash up front :)

Let me guess, he also wants to transfer the extra money for you to pay the transport company right? Anyway, this has all the hallmarks of a chargeback scam. Seriously fuck him out of it asap.

This scenario is a very common, high-risk scam, often referred to as an overpayment scam or a counterfeit payment scam. A buyer from abroad expressing immediate interest in paying the full amount—often without asking questions or negotiating—is a major red flag.
How the Scam Works:
The Overpayment/Fake Refund: The scammer will send you a payment (via bank transfer, cheque, or fake PayPal email) for more than the asking price. They will then claim it was a mistake and ask you to transfer back the difference.
The Reversal: The original payment they sent is fake, stolen, or will be reversed (chargeback) by the bank once they realize the funds were illegitimate. You lose the money you "refunded" them, and potentially the item, while they keep both.
Fake Courier/Third Party: They may ask you to pay a "shipping agent" or "courier" via untraceable methods (like Western Union or crypto) using the money they sent, which is another way to steal your funds.
Triangular Fraud: In some cases, they use your bank account to receive money from another victim, making you look like the fraudster (money mule).
Warning Signs:
Unusual Payment Methods: Insisting on bank transfers, Western Union, or asking for your email for a "PayPal" payment.
Urgency: Creating a sense of panic to make you act before you check with your bank.
Ignoring Logistics: They are eager to buy, yet live in another country and won't see the item, or they insist on sending a "courier".
Overly Generous: Offering to pay way more than expected or paying immediately without negotiation.
How to Protect Yourself:
Block and Ignore: Do not respond further to the user.
Use Platform Tools: Only use the payment systems built into the marketplace (e.g., eBay, Etsy), and never communicate or pay outside of the platform.
Verify Funds: If you do accept a bank transfer, confirm the funds are fully cleared in your account, not just showing as "pending" or in a screenshot.
Sell Locally: For high-value items, cash on collection is safest.
If you have already engaged with this person, contact your bank immediately to report the fraud.

No transport company, just a mate from Skelmersdale.

The wife is 100% don't engage.

Irish man
In Spain
Wants to buy bike unseen
Sending a mate to collect
Will send money days before collection

I dunno, he could be kosher, he was dead quick to send his passport, but I don't really know what that proves?

There was a warning on the BBC only a few months back, but that sounds like people being fooled by fake banking apps.

I also seem to remember hearing something about charge backs can take the money back out of your account after it's been transferred, especially with Paypal etc if they subsequently claim not to have received the goods etc. Might be worth speaking to your bank about the correct/safest method.

Personally, if your spidey senses are tingling I'd back out.

Both times after money was paid, I went into my bank and explained the situation.
They said my money was 100% safe.

Accept the money then contact your bank.

@KungFooBob Ring your bank up, ask if X amount goes in due to tranfer will it definitely be good. I'd go with what they say. Tell them what's happening.

I think I'm going to leave it, I'm in no way desperate to sell, it all seems a little bit fishy and I just really can't be arsed with even the tiniest amount of stress over it.

Did you explain to him why you have reservations? If he really wants the bike, then it gives him the opportunity to find a solution to suit you both.

Nope, I'm avoiding that because I'm a pushover.

In that case I'm after a bike I don't care about so much to ride on the odd winter day/might rain day in the summer. For a expenses I could house it here and run it for you. I might even clean it once a year

He called. I messaged him back apologising if he was a kosher buyer, but there are to many alarm bells for me and I wouldn't be going ahead.

He replied "why whats wrong?" so I blocked him before we got into a back and forth where I back down and get scammed.

I'd taken the advert down too. I'll put it back up in the Spring.
