It's an acknowledgement to her family that an extremely serious miscarriage of justice took place. It's also a note in history that the last woman who was executed in the UK shouldn't have been, which is historically significant, to say the least.gremlin wrote: Wed Jul 08, 2026 1:12 pm Ruth Ellis, last woman to be hanged in UK, gets conditional posthumous pardon

Does she have to hand back the title and the previous woman hanged inherits the title of last woman hanged in the UK?
I'm with Gremlin, what's the fucking point?

It's getting very political in here all of a sudden.
A flyer for a viable political candidate and pointless virtue signalling by the Labour party.

Re: In todays light hearted look at the (non-political) news
She's still a convicted murderer. If she hadn't been hanged she'd be 99 years old now or, more likely, dead. So it's a bit late to be trying to change history, isn't it? Just leave the dead alone, they're beyond caring.dern wrote: Wed Jul 08, 2026 7:11 pmI can explain it to you but I can’t understand it for you.Saga Lout wrote: Wed Jul 08, 2026 5:30 pmSo...dern wrote: Wed Jul 08, 2026 2:54 pm

Re: In todays light hearted look at the (non-political) news
She probably wouldn't have even got a guilty today, at least not for murder, more likely manslaughter, diminished responsibility etc blah. A miscarriage of justice is just that, and I admire her grandkids for pursuing this.
Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in the UK, has been granted a conditional pardon in light of evidence that she was a victim of domestic abuse and coercive and controlling behaviour.
Ellis was executed in 1955, aged 28, after she shot and killed her partner, David Blakely, whom she met two years earlier while working in the nightclub she managed.
The application for a pardon was brought by four of Ellis’s grandchildren who said her responsibility was profoundly shaped by domestic abuse, trauma and circumstances that were never properly recognised at her trial.
On Wednesday, the deputy prime minister and justice secretary, David Lammy, announced in parliament that, on his advice, King Charles had granted Ellis a conditional pardon.
Re: In todays light hearted look at the (non-political) news
Ruth Ellis.
It was pre meditated murder, she admitted to the killing,so manslaughter was never on the table.
Diminished responsibility ? You could say that to almost every killing since the dawn of time. unfortunately for her, the punishment at that time was the death sentence.
Posthumous Pardon, who really cares, the descendants of Ruth Ellis or the family of David Blakely?

Re: In todays light hearted look at the (non-political) news
Not wanting to labour a point, and it's not exactly topical news, but Nelson was complicit in the execution of over 100 prisoners after the formal surrender of pro-republican forces following the Battle of Naples. Maybe we could transfer Ruth Ellis's execution to him if we're judging historic crimes by modern standards.
Anyhow...shall we move on?

Re: In todays light hearted look at the (non-political) news
Someone asked me what qualifications I had for being a bike instructor? I replied that people pay for the courses.
They looked a tad shocked
I went on to explain that I had various riding and instruction qualifications.
I suppose the Count is viable in the sense (perhaps not the best term) that people have previously voted for him?
However, technically, he's not yet a candidate.

I have a theory that when naming a boy, one should picture the scene 20 years hence, when your strapping son enters a crowded pub and his mates in the far corner shout his name...

Also, never give your child a name they will struggle to spell.
And that's aside from the issue of phonetic Irish names ...

Oh, I dunno, by then everyone will think his name is actually Theo (which is quite a cool name really). Same as Frederick/Freddie - might as well cut to the chase at the christening and give 'em the short version).gremlin wrote: Thu Jul 09, 2026 10:52 am Most popular baby names for boys and girls in 2025 revealed

(A nephew was actually christened Tony - I suppose on the basis that if they'd called him Anthony everyone would be calling him Tony by the time he was 8 anyway).
The plural of 'anecdote' is not 'data'.
