She's still a convicted murderer. If she hadn't been hanged she'd be 99 years old now or, more likely, dead. So it's a bit late to be trying to change history, isn't it? Just leave the dead alone, they're beyond caring.

She probably wouldn't have even got a guilty today, at least not for murder, more likely manslaughter, diminished responsibility etc blah. A miscarriage of justice is just that, and I admire her grandkids for pursuing this.

Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in the UK, has been granted a conditional pardon in light of evidence that she was a victim of domestic abuse and coercive and controlling behaviour.

Ellis was executed in 1955, aged 28, after she shot and killed her partner, David Blakely, whom she met two years earlier while working in the nightclub she managed.

The application for a pardon was brought by four of Ellis’s grandchildren who said her responsibility was profoundly shaped by domestic abuse, trauma and circumstances that were never properly recognised at her trial.

On Wednesday, the deputy prime minister and justice secretary, David Lammy, announced in parliament that, on his advice, King Charles had granted Ellis a conditional pardon.

Diminished responsibility ? You could say that to almost every killing since the dawn of time. unfortunately for her, the punishment at that time was the death sentence.

Not wanting to labour a point, and it's not exactly topical news, but Nelson was complicit in the execution of over 100 prisoners after the formal surrender of pro-republican forces following the Battle of Naples. Maybe we could transfer Ruth Ellis's execution to him if we're judging historic crimes by modern standards.

Oh, I dunno, by then everyone will think his name is actually Theo (which is quite a cool name really). Same as Frederick/Freddie - might as well cut to the chase at the christening and give 'em the short version).

(A nephew was actually christened Tony - I suppose on the basis that if they'd called him Anthony everyone would be calling him Tony by the time he was 8 anyway).
