LOL. When I bought my V70 2.5T (estate, dark grey, obvs) the missus was most disappointed I didn't go for the V70 T5 that was on the showroom floor, resplendent in 'Saffron' (aka JRG). :D

I really like my 2019 S90 D4, but it's way too flippin' complicated, far too much technology, I know when something goes wrong it's going to cost me proper money!

That's my concern with pretty much any modern car. Perhaps an over-engineered but still fairly tech-free late 80s diesel Merc?

If you want a Derv then maybe a direct injection jobbie with a Bosch VP rotary pump, should run forever, potentially on cooking fat.

If you want a bit more refinement, then a VAG PD engine. The last attempt by the Hun to build a refined diesel before having to stump up licensing money to the Fronch for Common Rail tech.

That would be the 1.9 TD, I guess? They do seem to run forever and are reasonably quick even by today's standards. My T4 currently has 260k on the clock, so I guess it doesn't owe me much, if anything.

Yeah, pretty old tech, but solid. I had a 57 plate Focus with the 1.8 TDCi engine and that motor was built like a tank. I was a bit pissed off when someone drove into the side of it and wrote it off. The 2.0 HDi in my wife's Berlingo (55 plate) is another old but pretty much bombproof motor.

I had an 04 MG ZS with the 101TD (L-Series) engine. I fitted the injectors from a Rover 220SD and got an instant 15BHP boost, then I wound up the waste gate on the turbo. It was surprisingly sprightly and cost bugger all to run.

Shame the body was made out of old kitkat wrappers.

Modern Toyotas and Lexus are pretty safe IMO. Well, I don't know about the fully electric ones but the hybrids and petrol ones seem pretty good.
