On a different note, I saw the Gas Gas in the flesh and the boy riding it had put numberboard stickers on those enormous sidepanels. It looked less bus like and rather good for a few quids worth of vinyl.

Yup. I'd thought of that

with the 690 you really do have to ride it like you stole it to get the most out of it, you want it bouncing up near the limiter, you want it weaving into and out of bends, you want it bucking on the power... but you don't get that unless you're giving it a good handful. You arguably get even more of that when you've thrown 1T down on the front sprocket.

But it's still a mindset thing, you need the right mindset to enjoy one. I'd still buy a 690 (although a Duke) tomorrow if i were considering a return to motorbikes.

Still not worth you doing it. If a GasGas700 and 950 Hyper didnt prove exciting, I'm sure as hell a 300c supermoto, no matter how radical, is going to be pony on your roads. Even if you went for a 1290 SD you'd still be comparing it to the Gixxer. Best bet is a mandlebar conversion for it!

I really wanted it and loved the colour in the flesh.
I nearly got on the phone to buy it, but realised there's nowhere here to make it worthwhile really.
As I said earlier, if I lived on G.C. I'd have bought it. Loads of small mountain twisties.

My back is agony, so when it's right, gonna take the GSXR over to Fuertaventura to clear my mind

The GSXR is perfect for me.
My back was hurting yesterday but stuffed mesen full of ibuprofen and paracetamol.
When I stopped in the mountains for a photo, I couldn't get off the bloody thing

100% agreed...

I really wasn't that impressed with my SM700 for the first few hundred miles! Once the 600 mile service was complete, and I could access full revs, it started to make more sense...

But you need to be in the mood for it... And ride it like you stole it. But it does reward in spades when you do!

Sounds like the OP might wanna check out the new KTM 890SMT that's just been released... Or even a Ducati Hypermotard 950 possibly. Both Motard style bikes that can tour a bit more comfortably, and have enough torque that you can be a bit lazier with the engines than you can on a 690...

I tried my pal's 950 and instantly hated every about it.
And the 890 weighs same as my GSXR1000.

I can get road wheels and tyres for the EC300 for less than 2,000.

But I can't just nip out and go for a blast.
Sometimes I just wanna stick a helmet on and go.

I'll keep my eye out for good price 2 stroke and see what happens.

I'm gonna order some higher geared sprockets for mine and test the theory.

My Hyper reminds me of my 690 Duke a lot, but with 40+ bhp more! Same thing though, quick steering and works best when used hard! It's why I don't get why you hated it, when just about every journo on the planet loves them for their madness and I'd have thought you'd have the skills to exploit it in the same way?? But I've never ridden a modern litre Sportsbike so don't know how far apart it is from a 900cc twin?

It's hard to explain. I wanted to buy it before I went.
But didn't excite me. I kept trying to convince myself when it did summat good, but nada.

Hard front braking into downhill hairpins. Thousands on G.C. Not here.
And tight turning circle.
Had a bit of grunt in first 3 , but only on straights and screamed hard.
