I'm always a bit twitchy with retro-fitting quickshifters and the like, there have been stories of broken gearbags on the Z1000. Perhaps it depends who sets them up,but it would appear shit does happen.

Yeah it's a fair point. My QS is the mt09 and a retro fit for the XSR, so no issues there, but you have a valid point.
The other thing is, it's only useful on the track, which I'm doing less and less of these days

Re: Happy new bike day.... WTF, what do you mean it's a Yamaha ???
As you'll have seen on the 890 Scalpel thread, i was out on the XSR900 today.
It was interesting in terms of riding the XSR/890R back to back as it pulled out a couple of minor things on the XSR
1. Bite point on the clutch is quite far out
2. there's a 'dead point' in the throttle when opening it....
3. Forks still need 'something'
The clutch i may and try to dial out on the engine end adjuster.
The throttle is an interesting one as it's fly by wire, so no throttle cable. Normally you'd adjust that out with tension on the cable of throttle, but i'm curious as to whether you can do so on the FBW throttles.
The front end of the KTM890R was better than the XSR... I'd like to get the XSR a bit more positive in response.... MAybe i've set it too soft now... Dunno.

It's good to have the datum point of another bike to see what improvements can be made to your own,but there also comes a time when you stop making a bike another bike and just buy the other bike.
Just sayin' like.

Re: Happy new bike day.... WTF, what do you mean it's a Yamaha ???
I know it's a bit of a double post between the 890/XSR bu no, I'm not trying to make mine into something else, but making it a better version of itself, well that's ok.
I'm not taking radical things here, but little tweaks on it to improve it.
At Pembrey I'll hand it over to Bevan or keV the spanner guy and get some input on the bouncy stuff, see if they can tweak it.
The throttle and clutch I'm not too worried about but again, a small tweak may make them a bit nervous cer of viable.
Me and the XSR are still very much friends.
I'm sure there may be a better bike out there, but I have no idea what it is.

I was getting a very slight delay when opening throttle. Improved it by only using Repsol. Totally illiminated it by using posh 98.
No more delays. It felt like a loose chain.

Interesting. I'd be inclined to say it's not that, but hey, it's worth trying for sure.

Yesterday did 160 miles on lovely 98 Repsol and bike was perfect.
Had to fill up in Coralejo and only shitty Disa there. The delay came back a bit. It will get worse if I fill with crap again. Then 2 tank fulls of good stuff to clear fully again.

There was a bit of delay with the Zed too, plus a snatchiness getting on the throttle, but the flash and dyno run made it a beautiful thing,so maybe it could be tuned out. It's worth trying the superunleaded too, definitely the cheaper option over a dyno run.

It's not a delay at anything other than closed throttle, it's not a hesitation thing. It's just the initial few/4-5mm of throttle isn't actuating.

On the 790 there’s a bit of play in the throttle and there’s spacer kits like this that get rid of it.

I know that’s a KTM item but you get the idea! Might help…

I get the impression that despite what I thought, it's not ride by wire and is cable operated.

There seems to be an adjuster part way down the cable.

Old fashioned sort of ride by wire!
Unless the actuator is just moving the cable of course. In fact that would make some sense, 'cause you could have a common RBW system fitted to lots of models which is then connected via cable to lots of different engine configs "the old fashioned way".

Think they're a bit of both.

Lol I'll keep researching. I've adjusted the clutch anyway, so will test that in the morning if dry just to see if I prefer it.

is RBW - RBW just means that the throttle grip isn't directly connected to the throttle butterflies, which it isn't. The cables are connected to a sensor. On some other RBW bikes the sensor is right in the throttle grip housing

Translation.
Yamaha hadn't developed a sufficiently small/cheap/reliable grip mounted sensor when they launched they XSR. Cable actuated sensors on the other hand are an easy off the shelf item.

Weirdly though, mine is a 2019 and still using what i guess is considered the 'older' system for it.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Tue Aug 03, 2021 9:08 pm Translation.

Anyway, i've moved the clutch acutating arm tension to adjust the bite point, but at this stage i have no reference as to how much say 1/2 a turn on the cable affects the bite point, so will head out for some testing round the block once the world wakes up. I'd like to move it about 30% closer to the bars ideally. I've dialled it out on the bar end of the cable too so it has enough free play so it's not pulling the clutch on full time.
Once i get that bit correct, i'll start looking into the throttle. But don't want to do 2 things at once, i'm quite methodical when i make changes, 1 thing at a time only.

Agreed on the XSR controls, I thought that when I rode it and couldn't live with them like that, those aspects can be improved/sorted , but you'll never make an XSR/MT09 feel like an 890 handling-wise, whatever you do IMO.weeksy wrote: ↑Tue Aug 03, 2021 6:26 pmI know it's a bit of a double post between the 890/XSR bu no, I'm not trying to make mine into something else, but making it a better version of itself, well that's ok.

They are distinctly different bikes in physical size and weight, and as I think @couchy said, the XSR/MT09 do seem to have long forks / high bottom yoke, and I'm no expert, but I suspect that/the whole layout, geometry, weight distribution etc has a significant effect on how it feels- bottom line is it really hasn't been designed with the same primary aim as the 890 (and 790 before) has been
My five-bob's worth, FWIW is that I think you've found the bike that suits you best, and you love the most and that's the XSR.
Yep you'll ride other bikes that you might think have this or that bit better, but that doesn't mean you can necessarily make the XSR as good as any other bike in every aspect you wish and effectively " have it all "
I am I think very lucky as I have got my " have it all" bike with the 890R though- seriously - questionably gash/chavvy styling aside, its everything I want from a bike, for what my use it ( assuming of course it is reliable and doesn't disappoint in that respect )
