Same guy that wrote The Martian.
I totally binged it, got dragged into the story, physics was very good, a few bits felt a bit contrived but it was a bit lump in throat decision time at a couple of points and I was rooting for the second character by the end of the book and a lovely twist at one point.
It would make a great film.

Re: Reading: The Book Thread
Been reading soke of "The Expanse" books after watching the TV series.
First one was Leviathan Wakes and the next one I've fairly blitzed through is Calibans War.
Easy read, not much different from the TV series really and I suspect has been written with an eye on the idea of turning it into a series anyway.

Leviathan Wakes was brilliant, the next not quite at brilliant, etc...
If you like that type of thing, then I can recommend the Joe Scalzi's Old Man's War series.

Just finished "Going the Wrong Way" by Chris Donaldson.
Insane adventures on a Guzzi Le Mans, UK to Cape Town, and then USA to Rio de Janeiro, via Canada back in about 1980. If you think you are hard core, read this book!

Sanders?
I'd take the 'comfort' of an R1 over a Lemon anyday.

You have to be hardcore to do it with a front suspension tied up with a rope, regardless of the bike.

Re: Reading: The Book Thread
I've read them all, but only cause I want to know what happens with the main story arc. The final one comes out later this year. I don't think I could tell you the titles though, I just think of them as books 1, 2 etc.demographic wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 10:32 pm Been reading soke of "The Expanse" books after watching the TV series.

As I've said before I think, I reckon the TV series is better. That's a pretty odd occurrence for a book. The books often feel like they were written by and for a teenager IMO.

Re: Reading: The Book Thread
I'm sure there was a newer thread than this for books?
Anyways...
This last week I've read "Piranesi"
It's a good (short) read. Some interesting concepts and ideas. Shame about the lack of sword fights or spaceship battles.
I've just finished Gideon The Ninth.
The first chapters are really really strong, introducing a brilliant wise cracking lead. Then it turns into Ready Player One for a bit of egg hunting and then full on gothic horror, still brilliant, but not quite living up to the earlier parts, however it's a great story and I recommend it. I didn't see the 'twist' coming, which is unusual for me. I need to order the next in the saga.
Next up to read is A Deepness in the Sky.

Re: Reading: The Book Thread
You're probably remembering all the chat about sci-fi books in the 'Best sci-fi spaceship' (something like that)? Piranesi looks interesting.
Not my reading (no space-ships) but I bagged two Folio Society hardback+slipcover books in Oxfam for the other half. 'All Quiet on the Western Front' (then found she already has it) and 'Secret Pilgrimage to Medina and Mecca' by Sir Richard Burton - bargain at £20 (double that+ elsewhere and originally a fair bit more than that), not my cuppa but she's a happy bunny.

Re: Reading: The Book Thread
I read Snowcrash, thought it brilliant, but then didn't read anything else he did. All the reviews of stuff like Diamond Age, made them sound a bit high brow.
