If You've Got 18 Mins To Spare

Post by Yorick »

Young Guy Martin commentating on his 600 lap.

I've seen dozens of TT laps, but to hear the lad casually chuntering away is awesome.

He's even got BBC DJ Andy Kershaw hanging out pit boards for him :D

16700 rpm!!! That motor has some serious over-rev capability...

Which brings me neatly round to the oft repeated old Twostrokes rev to the mon fallacy.
I spotted the Gamma onboard this morning and meant to post it up, then just forgot.
Admittedly the Gamma 500 is a pretty old bike but the Honda RS 125s were fairly modern, pure racebikes. They don't really rev that high, although they do sound like they're revving higher cos they fire more often.

Both of those have more or less 125 cc cylinders.

Whats the redline on your GSXR 1000 Yorick? With more or less 250cc cylinders.
IIRC the Aprilia 1000 v twin that I can't remember the name of right now revs to something like 11000 rpm, with two fuggin massive pistons (well, large diameter anyway, not much more than a crown and some thrust faces in beight though) pumping up and down.

An RGV 250 revs to around 12000, but it only has little 125cc pistons. As far as I've been aware 4Ts have always revved higher than 2Ts. That's always been the case, even back in the 60s. The Hondas had to rev to stratospheric levels (for the time and level of metallurgical science) just to make competitive power.

IIRC the rev limit was valve float.

He had a full on day. Bit more about Norton failings.
