I've worked at several places where toetectors are compulsary, but it's not enforced.

If you lose your toes in an accident you'll have difficulty sueing them though.

They'll also be in the shit with HSE for not enforcing it.

Presumably it is compulsory to wear a CE helmet rathet than just any old helmet? I don't actually know cause its never crossed my mind to not wear a CE helmet.

Oh, and Helmets aren't CE marked (unless they are smart or have lights etc.), not only do they do not fall within the PPE regulation, but they are specifically excluded from it

I have worked in places where it WAS enforced. No safety shoes, no work.

AFAIK there's no specific law which says "thou must wear safety shoes" but there is one that says you must do risk assessments. When you do the assessment of building sites etc. you inevitably conclude that safety shoes are necessary.

Its the employers job to enforce it but its also the employees job to self enforce. So you'll both be in the shit if the worst happens.

We've had several instances over the years of people hurting themselves (i suspect many on here have similar experiences) and its only because we've got clear records of the safety procedures AND records of the fact we enforce it that we didn't get fined. I.e. if someone cuts their toes off we need to be able to demonstrate that we've provided them safety shoes and made sure they're fully aware they need them, with regular checks.

I imagine it depends on the size and type of your outfit. If you're a self employed subby working on your own who exactly are you gonna blame when it goes wrong?

I have Rukka, Racer and Held gloves, all three pairs cost three figures each (thank you, former employers) but how I tell if they are CE approved and to what level, I don't know.

Always wear gloves now when riding, after i had an off when I was a teenager-was picking bits of gravel from my palms for weeks. Did clear up my acne though.....

Don't have my Held gloves to hand to check. And my RST summer gloves I cut the labels out long ago as they were about 2.5 inches long.

I don't like paying VAT, but OTOH I really, really, don't want 'bike PPE' to become compulsory like helmets.

It seems to me that if we avoid VAT the likelihood of compulsory gear gets a lot closer.

Here in Spain, it will soon be compulsory to wear gloves when riding. The cost of fixing up hands damaged in even slow speed offs is really high, as i see few other riders wearing gloves. I think that the delay is caused by the government needing to legislate a minimum safety standard for gloves.

It has been suggested that airbag jackets/vests may also be made compulsory, and most likely will be in a few years.

I see girls here in shorts, bikini tops and flip flops on fair sized bikes. Pleasing on the eye, but not really safe

You can gauge whether gloves will be OK.
But I saw some fake Arai helmets for sale here a couple of years ago. Very good fakes, but fuck all use in a crash

I used to buy my Arais from helmetshop.com in the states and get them shipped over as a gift by my Cousin. They were all DOT rated or whatever the Yank version is. Never gave it a second thought when stopped by Plod and certainly never had them checked. A lot of the Harley riders I got to know wore those piss pot things and none of them had ever been nicked for it. I'm sure someone has at some point but i've never heard of it?

I think that the situation has changed, but didn't it used to be that any helmet worn had to be of an equivalent standard, but that was practically impossible to prove.
