Link is to a Change.org petition to get VAT taken off protective motorcycle gear, as it already is for helmets.

A £300 piece of kit would cost £250 if VAT exempt..

Yeah, I'm in two minds on this too. No one is forcing us to ride bikes.

As Yozza says you don't pay it on bash hats. You do on baby seats though, but only 5% (I've just bought one and noticed on the invoice, which surprised me!).

It seems to me that if we avoid VAT the likelihood of compulsory gear gets a lot closer.

Why should we on bike gear?

Helmets and boots are the only zero rated PPE, gloves, goggles, glasses, visors, lab coats, breathing equipment etc etc etc are not and are charged at 20%

So why zero rate M-bike gear? If it even leads an MP to think about PPE being compulsory on my motorcycle I can't support it

Here in Spain, it will soon be compulsory to wear gloves when riding. The cost of fixing up hands damaged in even slow speed offs is really high, as i see few other riders wearing gloves. I think that the delay is caused by the government needing to legislate a minimum safety standard for gloves.

It has been suggested that airbag jackets/vests may also be made compulsory, and most likely will be in a few years.

I see girls here in shorts, bikini tops and flip flops on fair sized bikes. Pleasing on the eye, but not really safe

I've worked at several places where toetectors are compulsary, but it's not enforced.

Can't see how bike gear can be made compulsary, or policed.

It's dead easy.
1, MP's pass a law to make it so
2, 5 - 0 check your gear for a UKCA mark every time they pull you over or mill around an event
3, Your insurance company ask for a photo of your label when taking out insurance and or request your damaged gear to be sent to them when making a claim.

CE marked gloves are already mandatory in that France

Compulsory gloves are an easy thing to police as non conformity is quite obvious .

Unless you wear flesh colour ones, but why would you want to, as the risk of a police stop will be so much higher?
