There's an ANL documentary on Amazon Prime, watched it the other month was quite good.Nidge wrote: Wed Apr 14, 2021 8:35 am Got to have at least a couple from Anti Nowhere League in any self-respecting punk list. I'd go with Woman and So What
Re: Best Punk Song..
If it is by the Stranglers, say, does that automatically make it punk??
In that case...:
GOLDEN BROWN Best song ever not to reach number one!! Thanks to the Jam and a Town called Malice!!
Ho hum!! But GB is just brilliant!!

Re: Best Punk Song..
Having come through the whole punk thing in 1976-78 ( although the trend setters would say ‘75 was the year) I never saw the Anti Nowhere League, Crass or the Dead Kennedys as punk ...
The Stooges / Iggy certainly deserve a lot of credit ...
But other great tracks
Blitzkrieg Bop - The Ramones
Another Girl Another Planet - The One Ones
Orgasm Addict - The Buzzcocks
Sweet Gene Vincent - Ian Dury
Red Shoes - Elvis Costello
Peaches - Stranglers
Where’s Captain Kirk ( Spizz Energy) - just because he is a Solihull boy ...
17 seconds - the Cure
Gary Gilmore’s Eyes - the Adverts

WOW, what a question. I suppose "best" is always gonna be subjective, but I think "punk" is too!

Think Crass formed in '77 and feeding of the 5000 was released in '78, but agreed they might not be classed as first wave, I think they're considered as late-comers as they only disbanded in '84 when most of the original had disappeared, but it's irrelevant to me when they formed.Mr Moofo wrote: Wed Apr 14, 2021 1:00 pm Having come through the whole punk thing in 1976-78 ( although the trend setters would say ‘75 was the year) I never saw the Anti Nowhere League, Crass or the Dead Kennedys as punk ...

DK another top band.
Agreed about Iggy and the stooges
Thanks to Supermofo for introducing me to something new (Booby Vylan), good stuff.
Oh and my username is taken from the band Flux of pink indians who I was listening to when I registered.

Re: Best Punk Song..
Love a number of these, and despise a few more. My adds to the playlist would be:
Chron Gen - Jet boy jet girl
The Cortinas - Fascist Dictator
The Adverts - No Time to be 21
All great live too!

Re: Best Punk Song..
Bob Vylan is awesome, he is genuinely mixing stuff up. Punk, grime, rap, metal all in a pot. Lots of his stuff on youtube. I watched an interview with him about his 'Church of Vylan' project where he was doing a song a week on the basis it forced him to experiment and create to get better and not worrying about perfection all the time. I also like one of his songs might be full on punk and another full grime and the next something different.Flux wrote: Wed Apr 14, 2021 9:04 pm Thanks to Supermofo for introducing me to something new (Booby Vylan), good stuff.

Or as they were known in Edinburgh by those who saw the graffito, The Explioted.
The MC5 need mentioning. Vague I know, but I don't have a favourite anything, nothing's that clear cut.

Christ it’s like being 12 all over again
that’s not real punk, that’s not real psychobilly, that’s not real new wave.... that’s too commercial.... I liked them before anyone else had heard of them...

Re: Best Punk Song..
Which reminded me of a tale ...
I was in a Band back in the Day.
We were playing at some London venue and were in the pub after a sound check.
A couple of girls who would turn up to see us were having a drink, so I start the conversation about getting in round the back (!!??) when they said they weren’t coming to see us , they were going to another gig.
They mentioned the name.
It meant nothing to me.
I have though thought over the last 40+ years who the fuck are the Cure ?

I must have been out of the country when punk was a thing and thus have never quite understood what all the fuss was about.
Take away all the "you had to be there" rose tinted spectacles stuff and there's a really high percentage of rubbish
