Movie thread, the good the bad and the ugly... No, not that one.... a review thread.

Post by weeksy »

We have a TV series thread, but not a movie one as far as i know.

So, post your movies, what you're watching/watched, ratings, the why....etc.

I'm currently watching Blade Runner 2049... I'm 60 mins in and i've still no idea what i'm watching or why... or what's going on or why... or... well anything.

Last film I watched was 'Knives Out'.

It's ok.

Worth watching if only for Daniel Craig's ridiculous Deep Southern accent.

Just re-watched the Harry Potter series. I'd forgotten how dark they made the last 2 or 3 films, even in a darkened room I could barely make out half the visuals.

They're enjoyable 'Take out brain and don't worry if nothing makes sense' entertainment (like most major films now). Although I did notice how a lot of the internal propaganda within the film storylines mimicked and parodied the real-life news media - certainly in the way it made me 'feel' about the stories.

The last film I (re)watched was Annihilation on Netflix: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2798920/

It's very clever, visually captivating and well acted (Natalie Portman leads). I just wish I knew what the feck the ending was all about.

Worth a watch IMO.

One film that was on Netflix but has annoyingly dropped off is Arrival with Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. Another intellectual sci-fi film, which isn't usually my genre, which is so cleverly plotted and structured that the final few minutes are a real, 'Fuck! I geddit!' revelation as the odd bits of the last hour or so fall into place.

Last night I watched Gone Girl.

Good film which keeps your attention. Some things seem strange but soon explained.

The ending is good, but I had to Google to see it fully.

I read the book of that first, mostly 'cause I saw the trailer for the film and then learned it was based on a book....so i just read the book 'cause it was cheaper and quicker :D

The author does some odd little short stories where religious topics are treated with some sort of scientific accuracy. E.g. when Angels (as described in the bible) visit earth they create massive natural disasters. It's a fun little read.

...and we have to send giant bio-mechanical robots to fight them, right?

Cos that's the plot (well some of it) of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

It's a great film, the 2nd one isn't totally terrible either, even if a flying 406 is a teeny bit far fetched... don't watch the Hollywood remake.

Just Mercy. Based on a true story. Pretty powerful and unsettling.

Apparently, for every 9 people executed in the US, 1 has had all charges dismissed. Some after being on death row for 20 years plus.

The one organisation featured in the film alone has freed 140 from death row.

Kajaki (or even Kilo Two Bravo). A slightly different war movie - British Para patrol in Afghanistan wander into a minefield. Have watched it a few times, not for the faint-hearted. 10/10 IMO.

I've seen the ending of Kill BIll Vol 1. probably 100 times. It was one of the films that was playing when I worked in a Cinema, so I'd be lurking in the doorway waiting for the punters to leave so I could start cleaning. BTW - post credit sequences are bloody annoying when you work in a cinema, all the comic books nerds sit there waiting until the very end of the credits!

Blade of the Immortal

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_of_ ... tal_(film)

Caught my eye in the movie section of C4's catch-up service.

I don't think I've seen another film with such a high body count, beat Commando hands down. It's not crazy gory, there's a few fights between the protagonist and quite literally hundreds of opponents... the fights take so long and he kills so many people it starts to border on boring!

Still worth a watch if you like Japanese Samurai movies. and have a spare two and half hours.

Sniper Assassins End https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12305696/
Down right bloody terrible.

Justice League snyder cut https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12361974/? ... _sr_srsg_0
4 hours of my life I'll never get back :jawdrop: (and I cheated watching it in 2 sessions) now don't get me wrong, it's a decent enough flick, turns a typical happy super hero film into a pit of dark despair, but sheesh, 4 hours.

I'll give that a watch this week. Just watched the trailer and the plot is shocking, but so is how much Jodie Foster has aged!

Justice League Snyder cut

Bloody excellent, almost 4 hours flies by.. so much better than the theatrical release by the ginger perv. The score is a bit odd, but other than that 10/10

Follows straight on from BvS brilliantly, if WB ditch the "Snyderverse" they're fucking idiots as they are much more than the colourful and enjoyable (but depthless) marvel films.

Started to watch Django Unchained last night. But the guy who freed Django was the dude from Inglorius Basterds, playing the same character but in a different uniform. Really irritated me so turned it off.
