How do you choose a pet name?!!

Post by Noggin »

My brother's cat has had kittens and he and his wife are keeping on of them. He wanted a tom cat so they now have cat named after his favourite Indian restaurant!! Bengal Lancer :) (Kitten is a Bengal!)

I can't remember the thought process for my cats, the names just seemed to 'fit'. But this choice made me laugh!! LOL

If I lived in Oz I'd have a dog named 'Shark'. I'd take him regular walks on the beach and call him frequently and loudly. 8-)

We've got...

Lola. The RSPCA had called her Erica and I didn't like it.
Bracken. Was called that by the RSPCA and it kind of stuck
Morris or Maurice depending on the how naughty he is... just seemed appropriate somehow.
Myrtle, the wife chose, I started calling her Squirtle, which got shortened to 'Squirt'.

I think there's something cool about giving pets very human names, like Kevin and Dave.

One of the nicest cats I ever met was an elderly siamese we adopted called Henry. At the sanctuary they said to feed him on raw turkey mince...screw that thunk I.....he would sit by his dish ignoring everything till you gave in and fed him turkey mince...talk about stubborn. he would beat the crap out of the other two cats, so I would take him up to the shower and soak him. this always ended up with a "yes, and your point is?" look from him. Then we found out he had been a show winner in his past and actually enjoyed a wash.

God...cat stories and I haven't finished my first drink yet.

we have a few

Jack - I had a few years left in the Navy and sailors are nicknamed Jack & Jenny, so he had to be Jack
Bronwen - wife chose it, it's welsh and means white (or fair) chest, which she has so it kind of fits.
Seren - Son's dog, welsh for star, he was 10 at the time and insisted that she would be a star, it turns out she's a complete PITA
Ianto - welsh for John, I just liked it and he's mostly known as Ant.

The fish and Bees don't get names because they die too easily :P

If its a dog its a short name, last one was Abe, one before that was Boy, and one before that was Fleet.

Daughters dog is called Patches but I call him Spud. He doesn't mind the alternative name and responds to it anyway.

We inherited my FiL’s black cat that was called Harry.

After that cat died we got another black cat that was called Jet.

However we kept calling it Harry and it started answering to it so we changed its name.

We have kept ferrets for over 35 years and ferrets are definitely n+1.

Mrs M has pointed out I missed:
Helva who lasted to 12-13 years which is like 180 in Ferret years
Panzer
Mikka - Fonzerelly

I don't think WD speaks Welsh, so...Popty ping doesn't mean anything really. It's certainly nor Welsh for microwave.

I named one of my wolves Dieffenbaker after the wolf on the show Due South..

At the time I didn't know the wolf on the show was named after a Canadian politician...

but he was always "Dief", although when people asked his name I used the full version.

No... its sort of modern slangy nearly welsh ( wenglish?) that gets mangled for ease of use.
