weeksy wrote: Wed May 13, 2020 9:49 pm I understand that, but it 100% defeats the whole point of it. It doesn't matter if I burnt 300 cals on yours and 300 cals in mine, covering twice the distance on yours and twice the trails. I didn't do it on my own merits. That's the point, it's not how fast, how far, it's doing it yourself.

I'll never get it. Ever.
But 300 calories burnt on an ebike is done by you, without you putting effort in they don’t move lol so you are still doing it yourself, why not add extra speed so you burn the same 300 calories but add in a load of Adrenalin for free 😁🏆🏆
Easy one.

Because I don't want to. Simple as that. I'm not you, or him, or, well, others, I'm me

It's not about the world going by as quickly as possible, it's not about getting the climbs out the way. It's about tranquility, it's about following a butterfly, or seeing a deer, a rabbit, it's about watching the clouds, noticing the seasons change, feeling the wind helping or hindering, looking out over the hills.

If I wanted speed, I'd have a KTM 350
And we still love you. Be sure of that......as we leave in the distance, departing with the faint whine of electric motors and the fading sound of us having fun.

We've decided to not go to France this year (irrespective of whether we can go I don't think it's the right thing to do, it's one thing riding around the High Peak and another throwing yourself down the Alps) and are instead spending a week doing the Peaks, and some other local spots like Wharncliffe woods, in mid July.

Hopefully accommodation will be open by then....

Further, higher, faster😀 Absolutely love my ebike, I understand why people prefer normal ones though, each to their own.
To the original poster, as Weeksy says try and buy local as they do all have teething problems.
I would also try and demo some if you can, they are surprising different, I bought a Cube without a demo and hated it on the downhills.
There also seems a massive markup, it’s pretty easy to get at least 10% off but I’d aim for 15. A mate has just bought a Trek Rail 5 for 3k.
I got a great deal on my Rail too, got 15% off a Levo when I bought one, all without much haggling.
New Bosch motor is great, old one was too but had water ingress problems. Brose motor is great to ride but quite a lot have problems, I returned mine as not fit for purpose.

I've been into mountain bikes for over 10 years now ,I live near to some good trails (Cannock chase) and have had a lot of fun on them over the years, and they have kept me fit.
Motorbikes , especially off road ones, have always been my passion though and if I could legally ride the trails on an enduro bike that I ride on my MTB I probably would never have got a mountain bike in the first place.
I'm still pretty fit and don't particularly need an ebike , but quite a few of my mates have now got them and they love em.
To me an ebike seems to be the perfect middle ground between mountain biking and motorcycle trail riding, with the advantage being- I have miles of trails I can ride legally on my doorstep.
Currently on the lookout for a deal on a trek rail,Merida, focus, cube etc but I still intend to use the clockwork bike sometimes although mates tell me that I won't 😂.
I can't wait!

It’s a fair point about if the trails were open to a trail bike I’d use one too, a lot of people are cyclists and it’s mainly them that don’t get the ebikes, I’m coming to an ebike because I can’t use a motorbike on the trails. That does a little disservice to the ebike as I do enjoy it hugely. One of the bultaco bronco ebikes would be ace though but highly illegal for trails. I’m more than happy with my ebike and have done way more miles on it this year than the motorbike

If that was an invite i'll have to be a tentative maybe.... partly for CV19 reasons and partly because of a small boy who isn't as into climbing as me. I know it's a little unfair that if i go MTBing then my lad comes as i'm aware it changes the dynamics of the group a bit, so is a little selfish of me to take him. But seeing him ride and watching him fly down hills or even plod up them, is really one of lifes big pleasures for me. But i understand it can disrupt the day massively for others.
So, maybe... maybe...

next time you see him, you ask him. Either he's been listening to me too much or the wifes decent low spec bike really is bloody awful, but he's ridden hers a few times and it's the closest i've seen him to speaking a swear word ;)

There is the crunch, all three have been cheap in wheel motors. I've never had the motor driving via the gears.

People here have mentioned reliability and I've read crank drive puts such a load on the drive poorly designed ones start snapping things. So saving by buying on line could backfire big time.

My mistake was forgetting the crank drive motors, mine have all been wheel drive. One was front wheel drive and could spin out the front wheel on a loose surface. That was interesting. It also got me thinking how easy and how much fun two wheel drive might be.

Given how you are describing your perception of e-mtb riding/handling/feel I suspect this is the issue.

My Trek, which bear in mind is a 2108 model and things have moved on quite a bit in motor/battery technology since then, feels exactly, EXACTLY, like a pedal bike to ride. The same as the Trek's Couchy and I had the last time we were all at BPW, that's the very reason that I swallowed my pride after having been so "anti" and bought one, because there is no discernible difference* and they are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much fun to ride.

*I caveat that with, IMO/IME you need to understand the basics of how the motor control works. The mode switch is your friend. Like I said before, think of it like a front derailleur, I'm constantly switching between the modes to manage wheel spin and acceleration and climbing power and battery life.

Hers is a decently specc'd 2019 Giant/Liv, we're not talking a Halfords special. It's a perfectly decent bike with decent componentry....

Couchy, how big a difference was there between your Scott and the Trek you rode at BPW? I seem to remember you saying it was massive?

What kind of terrain are you likely to be riding on; Smooth surfaces (relatively) like fire-roads and old railway lines or proper gnar single track, big, long, steep hills or more gentle rolling terrain?
