Restomods - what would you have built?

Post by G.P »

There are a few good YT channels that cover classics, restorations and Restomods and it seems to be a buoyant sector, people wanting top quality restored cars with a really engaging 'analogue' driving experience.
Lets say you won a prize to have a Restomod done to your specs, what would you choose? ignore the cost for the sake of this discussion.
Here are some of the highest profile examples:

The Singer Porsche https://singervehicledesign.com/

Image

These are gorgeous. ENgines done by Cosworth, choose your spec up to over 400bhp. Bodywork mainly CF so lightweight and fantastic attention to detail. Your not paying for it of course but if you were, half a mill USD for starters...

Alfaholics Alfa Romeo GTA -R https://www.alfaholics.com/

I've always loved these and if my numbers came up I'd be straight down to Somerset to order one up. A lightweight rear wheel drive transaxle 250bhp, Italian coupe. Lovely!

New Rally / fast road Escort - https://mst-cars.com/

A brand new and registered as new Mk1 or MK2 Escort with Dura Tec or even a Millington powerplant? Retropower cars will do you a similar job on an Opel if you're that way inclined!

Image

Cyan racing Volvo P1800 https://www.cyanracing.com/volvo-p1800-cyan

Too kool for skool

Image

There's loads more out there, what would you choose? :o :o

One of the lads had this Vauxhall Viva thing with some crazy engine. But I gave no idea other than that.

I'm going Audi Quattro!

I was gonna post the Cyan P1800 but you beat me to it. Gorgeous little coupe with a 500bhp touring car powertrain.

I think the most glorious one of these though has to the be Lanzante 911s with TAG/Porsche V6 engines taken out of old 80s McLaren F1 cars.

What's the opposite of a restomod where you've taken parts from older vehicles & added them to a newer one but still managed to improve it?

They are really lovely, I think Callum sticks another nought on the end because he's Callum though ;)

Talking of Jags, Have you seen the retropower XJ coupe?

Image

Lovely looking thing but they put an LS3 in it instead of staying Jag V12.
Harry Metcalfe of Harrys garage / Evo fame, has a v12 manual which is standard apart from suspension mods, its begging to be hot rodded IMO !

I know a guy (vaguely) who did that...Nick Mann. I knew him through his day job building MRI parts, he is the most gentle mannered man you'll ever meet and he giggles at the word "titmouse". But he also used to have a twin turbo V8 Morris Minor with nitrous.

Image

I say "used to" 'cause he replaced it with a custom built hill climb car that used a helicopter APU to drive a turbo so that it had full boost all the time. And a blown floor which produced 150kgf of downforce when the car was stationary :D

Check out the sound and the little boost gauge on teh bottom left which just maxes out :D

Does the Buick V8 predate the Moggy?

I was curious because altho my ZRX in a '99, it also has Kaw parts from '73, '76, '86 & '94.. so it's not *resto*mod... but could possibly be *retro*mod?

A replica of the Lancia Aurelia B20GT 'Outlaw' ('cos I'm bad to the bone, obvs).

It's beautiful and sounds gorgeous.

I remember seeing Nick Mann in an earlier incarnation of that Moggy at the Prescott Hillclimb in the early / mid 80's when it was a a turbo'd Rover v8.

He was quicker than an ex works 911 RS 2.7. He drove to the meet, changed the wheels to slicks. adjusted the suspension and off he went up the hill!

that is superb, shame they are only making 9. After an Alfa GTA-R, next on my list would be the Fulvia HF 1.6 (non zagato)

I like Plymouth Roadrunners to look at

Image

But to make it nice to drive I think you'd be taking the body panels off and fitting them to the space frame chassis of a modern NASCAR, so more road legal NASCAR than resto mod
