F1 Sprint Races

Post by Rockburner »

They're considering having a short 'sprint' race on the Saturday with some points available.

It might liven things up? Qualifying to my mind has become a bit odd to watch (as a mildly interested spectator).

Thoughts?

Works with Superbike but i doubt it would take long for F1 to fuck it up in association with team orders and strategy for the main race the following day or deciding which of their drivers deserves the championship this year.

Fuck.....
This is nowhere near enough to cover the costs of any damage to cars in the shorter race - a front wing alone can cost as much as $200,000.

Works well in GP2 so I can’t see why it wouldn’t translate to F1

That is the downside to wheel to wheel racing in F1...wheel to wheel damage costs run into the millions per prang!

I would say they could have a 'sprint spec' but I dunno how you'd police it.

F1 is fucked. It's all about money, advertising, money, TV rights, sponsorship, money and money.

One day some fool with a circuit will run a series like the old Formula Libre - whatever you want within reason. Old F1 cars from way back, newer ones, specials, all running free. Stop if you want, or don't, but a pit stop is a minimum of 2 minutes, and only 3 are allowed in a pit crew.. Prize money about threepence (old money)

Spectators will love it.

It's been about that since the late 60's :D

I know that in the mid 00's Renault's entire F1 budget was considered to be marketing, not Engineering. AFAIK it's actually less so these days, Mercedes and Ferrari both use their powertrain expertise in road cars now for example.
