Big Bang R1’s sound nothing like V4’s, they have their own sound but very twin like. Personally I don’t like them as it’s hard to tell what they are revving at without looking at the Rev counter, a very flat feeling engine at all revs. I’ve tried them several times and can’t gel with them at all, shame they sound lovely.

The firing/spacing order is exactly the same as a VFR800 style V4 AFAIK (i.e. not the RC45 etc.), although I don't know how it compares to Ducati or Aprilia V4s.

Its obviously impossible to say what objectively what something sounds like, but from my experience of hearing them by far the closest match is Honda V4.

Funny what you say about not being able to feel the revs, that's pretty much the point. Not so much the lack of rider feeling (although that is thought to be a big part of it) but the change in torsional vibration is why Yamaha used (or still use on the case of MotoGP) it.

That's a bugger. Not good that they led you on. Bits like the taped wiring are odd.

Yeah I could certainly do that. But I do like the fact our zx6 hasn't been down, so we know everything about it, good, bad and the ugly. There's no secrets, no hidden things etc.
We talked about whether it plays on her mind it's a shiny road bike and she assured me it doesn't.

When Yamaha made the very first big bang engine, you could hear the difference.

Honda recorded it, then slowed it down to analyse it.

Dunno about MotoGP, but in F1 it's common practice to record the sound of the other teams and run it through a computer to work out what gear ratios they're running, what their VMAX will be (they have a rev limit in the rules), when they're lifting in corners etc.

Hmmm I’ve had a vfr800 and it sounded like a V4, the R1’s sound more like a twin. I’m amazed they have the same timing and firing order 👍

Honda V4's on an open pipe make a proper 'Howl', the Big Bang R1 sounds much more like a big twin, imho.

Agree, however mr dazzle is 100% right. I’d never looked as they do sound different but they shouldn’t lol

The difference will be in the headers.

Edit. My old VFR750 had a very loud high level exhaust (don't think it was meant to be that loud!) but the standard header layout albeit patern. Cause it was quite a short can it was quite bassy.

I would say on hard power that sounded very V twin too, but more revvy. It sounded ace.

The difference is the firing order. In the first big bang, all 4 pots fired at basically the same time.

I've heard 'Big Bang' twice.

Once in the 90's for the Honda NSR500 GP bike and again for the 2010(ish) Yamaha R1.

One being a stroker and the other a four banger I assume there's a bit of a difference.

Same theory. Group the bangs together to give the time for tyre to grip between power strokes.
