We had a Grand Cherokee with the old 2.5 diesel. It always felt like a million parts driving in close formation, with electrics by Luigi and Xavier on their days off from Lancia and Renault from the 1970’s along with a manual gearbox that required notification in triplicate for a change. We got rid because diesel was getting pricey and the tax was horrendous. I’d still like another one.

I've a mate with a Ford Connect that has semi offroad tyres fitted. Lots of road noise but it goes places you wouldn't expect. They do a people carrier/minibus version.

As you mentioned 4 X 4 and someone else popped up an estate then i thought a little left field and went on the internet and found this <clarkson mode>

I am almost tempted to buy it myself but its an auto gearbox version and if that mileage is genuine then its a bargain

I think you'd be bored with that very quickly. It's the baby engine of the range and automatic, never sold well, less adaptable than the Forester and still thirsty. Yes, it's 4wd, but that's about all. And I'm never too impressed by very low mileage - it's spent too much time standing still and usually too many short trips with the choke (equivalent) out.

For me i would want the bigger engine too and manual gearbox as i took one on a trackday at Bedford many years ago and managed to embarrass a few other faster cars including a couple of Lotus ....save to say i am braver on 4 wheels and have more training at speed on 4 wheels than 2

For what Trinity said she needed and wanted its a possible if she is looking at old CRV Hondas and Rav 4's without the possibility of being bored

I can never figure out why, in a world where cars are fitted with automatic seats, automatic lights, automatic dipping rear-view mirror, automatic windscreen wipers and probably automatic arse hair trimmers, which people spend thousands ensuring their cars have, to make their lives just a fraction more convenient, there is an attachment to a third pedal and manual stick for changing gear ratios.....

I would never consider buying a car with a manual box. The faff of changing gear seems a little quaint and old-fashioned to me and ever so slightly pointless, when modern auto boxes do the job so very well.

The lack of control in an auto never fails to annoy me, the dual clutch auto I drove was worse than an old style auto.
My car now has probably one of the best auto gearboxes (8 speed ZF) and flappy paddles for manual selection but there is still a small delay pulling out of a junction. A slushbox makes lots of sense in my car (and was the only option) but I'll never stop wanting a manual.

In the Mustang I hired last September the autobox was rather hit and miss. In the 'road-driving mode' it was slow to change and didn't hang on long enough, and in the 'sporty' mode it was constantly hunting up and down, changing at annoying times and being a pain in the arse. I didn't try the 'track' or 'dragstrip' modes because (oddly enough) I didn't take it to those places.

It meant that you couldn't cruise and quickly change driving style to get around a caravan (say), and then fall back to cruising without going through about 8 pages of menu options in the GUI dash each time.

I far prefer manuals. Autos are fine as far as it goes, and brilliant when you've got a fucked up leg. I was lucky to be owning an auto (3ltr Opel Monza) when recuperating from a bad bike crash 25 years ago - it meant I could get out and about while my right leg was still weak.

If I was buying a 'fun' car for whizzing up and down the mountain to get shopping or just to go up and down the mountain (still want an MX5!!) then I'd get a manual. Everytime

But for work I dream of an auto!! I spend so much time in traffic that I think the autobox would be bloody AWESOME!!!!

Depends what kind of car it is really, and how important certain things are to you.

In a big, comfortable car for wafting around in then automatic is nice. For driving sportily then a full automatic is just appalling. Approaching a 2nd gear corner at speed in 6th is not good, efficient, effective or even safe.

Flappy paddles are arguably the best compromise, but you still lose some satisfaction in doing it yourself, if that's the kind of thing that turns you on. A perfectly executed heal-and-toe is a very satisfying thing.

I currently have a fast automatic with flappy paddles and it's nice, but not really a 'sports car', partly because of the flappy paddles. When I browse autotrader for sports cars that I won't buy, first thing I tick is 'manual' to dig out the good ones :)

And there's the nail hit firmly on the head. Look at any advert for any car and it's destination aspiration. Mountain passes with majestic vistas, beautiful, sporty people with their beautifully behaved kids and labrador halfway up a waterfall, hipsters whizzing about the city, neon lights reflecting off empty streets, with not a sign of a KFC box or dog turd.

Skip to the reality and you want convenience: somewhere to throw the (not so beautifully behaved) kids, the wet dog, shopping, your mum. The twisting mountain passes are more likely the A232 with the usual traffic and, fuck me, is the service and MOT due again?

Without whapping my huge wanger out on the keyboard here, I could buy most any car I wanted, within reason. I drive a Honda CRV as it's simply convenience on four wheels. I also have a Merc SLK which is a pain in the arse as far as convenience goes, but as least it ain't got a manual box.

Totally. One of the reasons I don't really go anywhere much when no working is I hate driving the LWB minibus or even the SWB transit up and down the mountain! They are good for the job but not for fun!
I'd even take just a smaller car over one of those if I just need to go shopping or meet friends!!

A DSG box is far superior to a manual box. Changing down or up, either by gear lever or paddles, is far quicker and more efficient. Changing gear in a manual box has a longer gap in powered drive and unloads/loads the suspension accordingly, not a good thing when hurtling through bends. Those that enjoy a manual box simply enjoy an old fashioned form of driving!
