If You Had To Buy A Bike To Sit And Look At ?

Post by Yorick »

No decisions here. I still think about buying one of these, just to stare at. As a yoof they blew our brains out..

Ok, and as a special favour, I'll allow one race bike. No guesses who was my second idol growing up

I'd happily spunk 20 grand to have that in garage to drool over.

Watcha got ?

Road bike was i still don't think anyone has topped the 916, although I actually prefer the later 996/998 with grey frame and 5 spoke wheels.

Race bike there is nothing which even comes close to coming close to the RC221V for me. I just had a quick look and I can't even see any for sale, which is not a surprise.

Just to look at?
Not to ride at all?
Well, for me it has to be something I like the look of but realistically wouldnt fit onto.

I kind of just don't get the idea of having a bike I could ride kept in a glass case. If its a roadbike I want, then eventually I'm going to want to ride it.
Plus that Kreidler doesn't take up much space and I could likely just hang it off the ceiling like a pushbike.

I really wish I had t sold my 998s.
Didn’t have the space at the time - have plenty of space now. Whilst they can look a little dated , they are a beautiful bit of design ....

Friend of mine still has a 998S Final Edition that he purchased new in 2004. The whole 916/996/998 thing has never really appealed to me but suppose I do understand him hanging on to it.....

I wouldn't mind running a duster over this once in a while.

Bikes are for riding.

But, I wouldn't say no at all to having either of these parked up 'on display*' in the living room :

Yep, this one for me too

I wouldn't want to ride it as it's too precious and in all probability not as good as road going bikes I've ridden that have 25 year newer tech ! (yes I know the bike was built in the early 90's, but John Brittan was at least 5 years ahead of everyone else !)

Bit more than 5.

All it would need is modern tyres, new shocks and maybe some fancy wheels and you could sell it today.

Just thinking back, I don't think there are any road bikes which use proper structural carbon like the Britten does?

Imagine if race regs had allowed him to exploit feet first ;)

Still, BMW must have sold something like 1/2 million FFE bikes since the 1100RS was launched.

I wonder what indicator switches Britten would have chosen? :D

Genuinely - I'm struggling to think of any areas where the Britten would be considered behind the times even today. That's as much a comment on the slow pace of motorcycle development as it is on the sophistication of the Britten! I suppose it doesn't have switchable rider modes or traction control etc., but not much else is off the pace.

It's a ground up rethink of bikes, incorporating lots of ideas from aerospace and car motorsport, so if anything it's what conventional (i.e. not feet first) bikes "should" be like if they were built based on pure logic.
