All modern cars would be disabled by an EMP.

Plus the often overlooked detail that EMPs are generally associated with nuclear bombs. If someone is deliberately setting those off in your area you've probably got bigger issues.

In all seriousness electric/hybrid vehciles should be loads better on snow. They don't need a clutch (the electric motor will happily spin at 1rpm, it doesn't have a minimum speed like a conventional engine) and they are much easier to control because there are far fewer moving parts. Therefore you can have as much torque as like/don't like at whatever speed you want.

That's what I figured after talking about the auto vans. Electric should be easier - unless you have a lead foot!! LOL LOL

I think some of them have a 'snow creep' mode where you set a speed (say 5mph) and it doesn't matter how lead your foot is, it will just pull off and drive up to that speed.

My parents conventional auto car already has something very similar.

I think that was what came out of the auto conversation - if you just let it do its thing, it will start off quite easily. And also all the work cars/vans have really good snow tyres, so you do have to be pretty horrible to it (and have a full load) to not get moving!!

Still waiting for someone to explain what happens when we go all electric & some bugger sets off an EMP weapon... altho tbf, all it takes to bring everything to halt where I live is for the weather to get a bit blowy & they turn off the power.

Yes, but where I live they have banned CNG etc in new construction, all homes must also be 100% electric. When I said "all electric" that's what I was referring to. We're already at the stage where we don't have the generating capability to power the entire State during the Summer leading to rolling brown-outs.

EMP=electromagnetic pulse.

CNG=compressed natural gas

ZRX= A Kawasaki motorcycle.

Brown out=, to me anyway, when the voltage of an electrical supply drops significantly enough that incandescent bulbs dim from a bright near white to a yellowish one. AIUI it can also damage electrical devices so it's to be avoided, hence brown out's being rare in the UK AFAIK. Again AIUI there should be devices in the mains supply system that detect the voltage drop and cut the supply before damage occurs.

I'm merely wondering if the Americans describe the above as a brown out, or it's some other phenomena, possibly a deliberate act, rather than accidental.

Bear in mind I'm merely an interested amateur and have had no formal training. I do live on an island that has it's own power station and you could tell when they were swapping generators because the lights would go very bright, then dim, and then back to normal as the supply voltage fluctuated and was corrected.

How the electrical grid works is an interesting subject if you're a boring as I am.

Even if you had a had a gas powered house it wouldn't save you in an EMP. Not unless you've got boilers and thermostats etc. without electronic control boards...and they stopped putting those in houses back when ZRXs were modern

But again, I think we're overlooking the larger issues with the EMP thing

They turn off the power in some areas for a while (usually 3-5 hours), then turn it back on & turn it off somewhere else rinse & repeat.
They've already managed to kill a few people who were hooked up to medical machinery.

Rather worryingly my wife is thinking about getting an electric car. Being as she can run out of fuel in a diesel I should buy a warm coat, a generator and a book.

FWIW gas boilers cannot be installed in new build homes from 2025 in the UK.
