Sorry to hear this Taipan. It is really scary. I felt like that in the last house I lived in when I had a bike stolen. It's really frustrating with the Police, too.
My wife's fear and upset has turned to anger now! We're both frustrated at teh Police too. The guy I spoke with said holding teh door handle is a common tactic to buy them more time. I said its not just the door handle holding, its the fact he was armed with a claw hammer in his other hand that is the bigger issue. To me, this says they came armed and prepared to inflict violence and this should escalate the matter from attempted motorcycle theft, but, no, its gone down as "Vehicle interference"!

Where though? I work in central London with people from all the home counties and not one of them doesn't have increasing crime where they live. The Bally Boys on their surrons etc are in most big towns now.

We do have plans to eventually move to a small town out on the north Essex coast, but that's not just yet, plus the housing market is apparently dire anyway, so a move unlikely to happen quickly. There is some things happening at work that may change my circumstances though, so things might change whether I want them to or not?

Not a town :) Sure, it's not a foolproof plan, but the further you are from society, the less society are aware of your existence. Therefore the less hassle. There's thousands upon thousands of places with literally no-one for miles :D Pick one of those.
I don't know if Essex has these little hamlets/villages, but i assume so.

But it's a different way of life.

Oh man, sorry to hear that Taipan, what a bunch of cunts.

I noticed the kid holding the door wasn't wearing gloves like the others, or at least looked like he wasn't? Whilst I'd guess they'll be a lot of prints on the door, his must have been one of them?

For now I'd see if you can move the bike elsewhere for a while, round the back probably wouldn't work. I doubt they'll check more than once again before moving on.

The whole police ignoring the hammer thing is infuriating as you know for a fact if you found out who they were and went round armed with a bat the law would class that as premediated, whereas I've no doubt this is a box ticking exercise to fob you off and keep the crime stats in the right zone for them.

Essex has tons of little hamlets and villages, and I like to visit them, and do quite a lot, but they're not somewhere I could ever see myself living. I like living in a town. I like a bit of hustle and bustle, a market, a good few shops, restaurants, and a degree of anonymity.

As i say matey, the problem with towns is, they have more scrotes and if you leave a motorbike outside... well, that's what will happen. Doesn't make it right of course, but is what i'd expect.

It's attempt theft rather than interference IMO. They came with an angle grinder so it fits the 'more than merely preparatory' part of the theft definition. VI is an easier offence to prove but it's more aimed at someone who does something opportunist. This was planned/ targeted.

Yea, I hear you alright, but I can't let others (scroates) dictate how I live my life, or where I live. If crime continues to escalate, then I may change my mind because of it I suppose, but I'm not there yet...

That being the case, and with your inside knowledge, how do you suggest that TP persuades his local police to take his attempted theft seriously? It does sound like they just want him to go away.

Difficult as all forces work slightly differently. I know Essex have an online crime reporting hub, you can update or request things through that. If an officer has been allocated, could quote the bit I said above to get the crime reclassified. But tbh, it would only make a difference if the little dicks are caught.

I had my ex force tried to fob my wife off when she was scammed by a builder, they told her it was a civil matter. I called 101, spoke to another person who also said it was a civil matter, as soon as I quoted some law, they put me on hold, then when they came back, crimed the matter as a fraud. The guy has subsequently been arrested and file is being put together for the CPS. So, I guess you have to sort of stand your ground a bit really. It obviously helped that I had 25 yrs experience and knowledge behind me. ;)

The level of service from the police these days is generally appalling, and frankly embarrassing.

Surprised the useless cops haven't classified having the hammer as intent to commit carpentry...

If they don't charge/prosecute perps then they can claim crime numbers are dropping, a popular tactic here in California.

Oh…
There's a difference between attempted murder & merely beating some shitstain senseless. Attempted murder got the guy 9 years, merely hitting some fucker hard enough that their head puts a hole in their office door gets you 28 days & a £50 fine.

I really don't want to bash the shit out of anyone. What I want is a police force that is resourced enough to respond to such crimes. Simple fact is, if I hadn't put a stop to their attempt, they would have continued and had my bike away. Now I know they come armed, if they come back, I have to go out withs some sort of bat or suchlike to be able defend myself. I really shouldn't have to be put in that position.

They will respond. 99.99% of officers would like nothing more than to catch the shites at the scene. But, resources being what they are all over the country, they'll potentially be miles away, but take it from me, they'll do their utmost to get there.

Whether that's acceptable to most people is another matter?

And I'd say don't confront them, but tbh, even at my age and having retired, 100% I'd still be out there like a shot.

Me worrying about shed security whilst we were away was getting me anxious when I had nice bikes. Now I have a couple of rough motorbikes and the mountain bikes are 7+ years old I'm not overly bothered. This is what insurance is for in my case, it's crap that because of a minority of miscreants I don't think it's worth the worry of having nicer things but I get just as much fun out of what I have got.

Pay more tax. It's that simple. Law enforcement costs a stupid amount of money, and there is never enough in the coffers.

By the way - is the bike under a cover? (sounds like a daft thing to say, but I can't remember your situation).

Generally speaking, the harder you make it for them to see the bike, access to the bike, or move the bike: the more likely it is that they'll go for the next one on the list.

Might be an idea to take a stroll around the neighbourhood and see what other people are doing for their bike security?
