Harvest time. 🥕

No garden, but back in the day I grew onions, broad beans, cauliflower and cabbages with some success. Spuds, beeroot and awedes too, but carrots never worked for me. Peas are just not worth the effort, Mr Bird's-eye does them better. Lettuce always got nibbled by slugs or rabbits, or something else nocturnal.

I'm hoping to try and grow some stuff when I get to the place with a terrace ! Although, will probably have to wait till spring as winter starts early here - maybe less early in the valley !!!

Parsnips are a bastard to get to germinate. Is that not what you were thinking too?

I've been having a go at growing veg for about 15 years now. I've tried all sorts and different approaches.

I only do a single variety of tomatoes now, Tomatoberry.

These are the three pots on the roof, there are more down in the garden but I haven't looked after those so well and they're not as good.

I've had quite a few off them already but there are plenty more to come.

Mrs Ds got the onions/ shallots in and doing well by the looks of it. Various small things growing in the greenhouse, most are in toilets rolls, apparently it doesn't upset them so much when transferring to garden.

My anticipated excitement is the " Tri - colour Budleigh ", seeing is believing as you don't know wtf you've bought until it flowers. Planted about 5 month's ago and is growing well. Not sure what the "wild lawn" will do, FA probably but being a friend of the earth I thought I'd give it a go, I'd imagine the daisy's and dandelions will be happy.

Not sure what the "wild lawn" will do, FA probably but being a friend of the earth I thought I'd give it a go, I'd imagine the daisy's and dandelions will be happy.

Provide cover for such marv things as grass snakes. Bees 'n other insects will appreciate any dandelions too.

But it also means.....less mowing

I've gone a bit mad with tomato varieties this year, planted a bunch of old seeds to see which would come up, and the answer was almost all of them

What vareties have you planted? I really like the 'black' varieties like Paul Robeson, loads of flavour and one slice covers most of a sandwich.

I've found the orange ones to often be the tastiest, not tried any black ones though tbf. Maybe we should do a seedling swap

I've always grown Sungold, as I don't think the flavour can be beaten, it's just annoying that it's an F1. Full list of toms I've sown this year:

Onions and shallots have been in a while now, raised bed. Raddish went in recently followed by beetroot the other day. Carrots still in greenhouse. Can't see any tomato plants yet.

I'm in charge of lawns and Budleigh border, couple of small trees and 3 or 4 shrubs. It's all coming on quite nicely.

Tip...keep friendly with the neighbours for watering when on your hols.

Blimey... with that little lot you won't go short of tomatoes in September Having said that home grown tomato pulp is just the best for Ragu and Chilli con Carne. The flavour just can't be beat. Must check out Sungold... This year I'm mainly growing Chillis and Pimentos, but a mate has offered some tom seedlings, so I'll definitely grab a few (no idea what varieties, though).

Green Zebra is incredibly tasty too - I grew it once for novelty value and it's a permanent fixture now

I've not done any chillies this year, but my neighbour (with a massive polytunnel) has, so a seedling swap is likely to happen
