The early HRC 650 was actually pretty good, after that they turned into top heavy tourers

It was the 650 that I really liked the look of (I loaned someone some kit for a trip to Chernobyl on his and I thought his bike looked like a very handy piece of kit).

A few of the Dakar inspired bikes got lardified over time. The 80s BMW R80 GS was a very different proposition to the current 1300 beasts. (I could have bought a really nice condition one for not a lot of euros in 2004 and I kick myself occasionally that I thought it was too much of a faff getting it back from Germany :( ).
