Getting home in the light! Yesterday was my first day at work in 10 days, and last time I was there, I left in the light, but it was dark by the time I got home. But now it's daylight all the way!

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
Chatting with a colleague at Lyon a couple of weeks ago and I mentioned that I’d never had a knife to carry about but all of the guys have one
He then told me I should look at Opinel because that are proper Savoyard knives
Anyway, everyone was at Lyon on Saturday except me but one of them came to visit this evening with a girl from the office.
The guys from our Lyon group had clubbed together and got me an Opinal - and had it « engraved »

the « Mixmit » is what some of them called me till they worked out Smixxy!

What lovely people I work with

My daughter bought me the same knife. Just be careful, as it closes very easily. Cut fingers are not quite what you need.Noggin wrote: Sun Mar 15, 2026 6:47 pm Chatting with a colleague at Lyon a couple of weeks ago and I mentioned that I’d never had a knife to carry about but all of the guys have one

The carbon steel version has a tendency to corrode if it isn't regularly oiled. Mine did.

@Noggin , while you're in hospital practice opening the blade and rotating the collar to lock it until it becomes a natural action, might prevent little accidents.....

Mine absolutely does not rotate. It's riveted on the metal collar.Rockburner wrote: Sun Mar 15, 2026 9:06 pmYou're aware the metal collar rotates to lock the blade... [True. It was 'shorthand'. If you want to explain how to explain to a copper why you're carrying such a knife in public and so avoid an expenses-paid visit to the local cop shop, feel free

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
Just out of curiosity, what are you doing day in and day out that necessitates the need to have a knife about your person?
At the ripe ol' age of 56 I've never felt that I've been in a situation where the whipping out of a blade from its belt-worn sheath would have saved the day...

I have a 'Swiss Card' in my wallet. It gets used very often, although the piddly little blade rarely.gremlin wrote: Mon Mar 16, 2026 11:24 am Just out of curiosity, what are you doing day in and day out that necessitates the need to have a knife about your person?

As part of my ambulance uniform, I have a belt pouch with hefty trauma shears. Been used several times ... To cut sticky tape

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
I have one in my toiletries bag that was a corporate gift from some long-forgotten company. Minus the pen (impossible to write with anyway), nail file (useless too, just raid the vanity pack in the hotel bathroom), toothpick (?) (floss is your friend) and something else I can't remember, which have been lost over the years. The scissors are still there but not much good for anything and the blade, actually being quite sharp, is good for cutting open tubes of sun cream to get the last dregs out*.
*Tight? Me?! How dare you!

I was given it as a Xmas present. Two days later, we were with a group of friends in a bar in Normandy.
11 people all quiet for the first time.
Someone foolishly said "You could hear a pin drop."
And you could

I've had a pocket knife on my person every day since Akela gave me a badge saying I could whittle a tent peg safely, so going on for 40 years now I'd guess, leaving the house without one would be akin to stepping out of the front door naked.gremlin wrote: Mon Mar 16, 2026 11:24 am Just out of curiosity, what are you doing day in and day out that necessitates the need to have a knife about your person?

Likewise. Even if I'm dressed for a wedding/funeral I'll still have a little penknife somewhere. Folk around me who don't carry a knife and don't see the need for one, seem to regularly ask to borrow it.MrLongbeard wrote: Mon Mar 16, 2026 12:47 pmI've had a pocket knife on my person every day since Akela gave me a badge saying I could whittle a tent peg safely, so going on for 40 years now I'd guess, leaving the house without one would be akin to stepping out of the front door naked.gremlin wrote: Mon Mar 16, 2026 11:24 am Just out of curiosity, what are you doing day in and day out that necessitates the need to have a knife about your person?

Things I've used my knife for today.
Opening a bag of logs for the woodburner.
Cutting the plug off and old lamp.
Cutting of those wank retainers from a milk carton lid.
Chopping a bramble branch which was attacking folk on a path.
Filing a nail.
Cutting of a label from Mrs.Skub's top before she went out.
