Do you still have a land line?

Not for many moons. When it was in use,it rang constantly with spam calls,so it ended up unplugged long before it was actually binned.

There's still a line in place if I wanted a digital,but no one here has a use for it.

Nope, switched to FTTP a few years ago and after ex moved out, I unplugged the landline attached to the router as the only calls on that number were from the MIL.

The annoying thing was, prior to switching to FTTP and free calls, the pair of them would natter about nowt for well over an hour at a time, so chargeable, when they both had unlimited minutes (with no 59 minute limit) on their mobiles…

Yes, but it's a VOIP solution through our internet router, it doesn't cost me anything so why not have it.

By the way part of my job for this year is moving over 4000 lines from a combination of isdn30s and analogue circuits to VOIP solutions, I've done most of them and I've got 1 left to do.

Not onto your hard disk (and backed-up for legal purposes etc) and played back through your headset while you talk into the microphone and see your words magically appear into a Word document as you constantly press <pause> and <play> though.

You probably could work something out/lash something together but, then again, why would you when there's stuff designed for the job?

Work did away with landline phones, instead all being done through the laptop. So that probably means the rest is doable.

But you'll need someone a. suitably techie and, b. who gives a ...

I have a VOIP phone with the Parish number. Permanently forwarded to my mobile as it is not Bluetooth. I've never used it for calls or to receive calls... I'd bin it, but the parish needs to have a permanent phone number for people who don't use internets to communicate.

Nopes. Was switched off 3-4 years ago. Can't see any reason we ever would again. We only had it for the 10 years before that as it used to connect to Sky.

My studio apartment in the Alps has a land-line.

I don't know the number, I've never given it out, I unplugged the phone about 5 years ago.

Binned it 5 or 6 years ago. Unlimited text, calls and data for £16 a month means i have no need for a house phone.

Like others, we have one, but we started to get so many spam calls on it nothing has been plugged into the socket for years. (Moved the in-laws into the habit of calling on mobiles instead, and that was the last time they got used.)

I think I keep it as an emergency back up. But then the (battery, cordless) phones probably wouldn't work any more if I did plug em in. Hmm.

With the ongoing changeover to fully digital, 'drop back' phones will no longer work (and neither will many of the call systems used by elderly and frail).

Yes they will, you can get analogue to VOIP telephone adapters.

The UK telephone network has been fully digital switched for at least 30 years, the links between exchanges have been VOIP for at least 20, it just extending VOIP to the customer, so the end of PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) where you dialling the numbers controlled the route of the call, from the end of this year it will be a Packet Switched Network where the source and destination IP addresses on the voice packet controls how the packet gets between end points.

We got a single new handset when they switched us but, iirc, I just put a converter on the base station of the 4-pack of the old Panasonic handsets and the call recording system. Works fine.
