KTM 1390 Super Duke

Post by Pirahna »

Picked it up yesterday evening. This morning I've cleaned the mirrors, looked at the toolkit, put the suspension at factory default settings, moved the gear and back brake levers to their lowest setting, adjusted the bar levers, read some more of the manual and taken a picture.

I managed to get a demo ride a few weeks ago at a dealer 3 hours away. I got it from a KTM dealer in Alicante, wifey dropped me off and I took the long way home. It's the non Evo version, so normal suspension not electric.

It's a big comfy bike that's easy to ride. I'll write a bit more later, the sun's out so time for a ride.

It's got a 4 year warranty (but it's KTM so fuck knows what that's worth), insurance here comes with EU wide breakdown cover.

Instead of or as well as the Ducati?

I'd like one but I'm too much of a reliability coward.

Instead of, for a variety of reasons.

I've owned KTM's before, they do have a bit of a bad rep but it's really not justified. The big one that puts people off is the cam problem with the early 790/890 twins. The cams were made of cheese and KTM basically told customers to fuck off and do one. That said, Tomcat has an early 790 and has had no issues, so they're not all bad.

I did 300km's this afternoon, a lot of low gear stuff in the mountains outside Benidorm. I needed to pop into the hearing aid place in L'Albir anyway so it was a good excuse to put some miles on it. Lots more mountains on the way home. Nothing broke, everything worked.

I've been expecting it, the bike was fucking about this morning. It started but cut out when I went to pull away and that was it. The battery voltage is shown on the display and it's a couple of points down on normal. Looks like I'll be buying an Optimate.

Wouldn't you go back to KTM and ask for a new battery first ?

If it was 3-4 years old then yeah i'd be going Optimate or getting the wallet out myself, but that really should be covered by them.

What a gorgeous bike. Sadly, not for me, last time I rode a 990SDR that Screwdriver gave me the keys for I could easily have lost my license multiple times over. Just such an awesome hooligan bike with an immediacy and urgency that was a revelation.
