Volvo diesel ?

Post by Dodgy69 »

My lads looking at the V40 diesel 2.0. I don't know anything about Volvos, never driven, never noticed, never bothered. All I remember was they always had their lights on before it all got dangerous. 😯

Just googling and they seem highly rated. Economical with enough go, cheap tax and look pretty good. 1.6d has very good mpg.

Anyone have any experience with such things. ??

I had a V40 Cross Country... well I bought it for the wife then a year later situations changed and we swapped cars and I drove it for six months before trading it in for an S90.

It was a D2, 120bhp Auto.

Some time around 2015 they stopped using Ford engines and made their own VEA line of motors. All the VEA's are 2l and share the same block. It's only the turbos/maps that change (The D5 isn't a five pot like the older Ovlovs anymore). Any 1.6's will be Ford older engines.

Mine had the VEA engine. I could easily get mid 50's MPG on my commute. The ECO setting on the gearbox did clever coasting when the power wasn't needed and the speed was over 40mph, really helped with the MPG.

It had the most comfortable seats of any car I've ever sat in.

Volvo aint generous with options and retrofitting stuff like parking sensors and cameras is almost impossible due to the way their software works. Make sure to find one with the options he wants already.

The V40 is an upmarket Ford Focus/Mazda 3, the 5 cylinder diesel is the pick of the diesels in terms of reliability.
The early models were basically ford engines before changing to the VEA motors in 2016 has Kungfoobob mentioned.
Generally well built and command a bit of a premium over the Focus but standard equipment is a bit sparse, options make a massive difference to value.

I had the V50 2.0 diesel. Went like shit of a shovel if you want and economical if driving sensible. Only issue i had was the crank shaft sensor fucked up but it was in a stupid place. Bottom front O/S of the engine so it got the shit from the wheel when turning. Think it counted blobs on the flywheel rather than teeth on the flywheel.

There's a lot of confusion online about the belts.

Volvo told me mine was due on the S90 because it was due it's 5th service. It was due a service every 12 months or every 18,000 miles. They assume that the 5th service will be at 90,000 miles... which is when the belt is due, but my car only had 60k on the clock.

Anyway, I think it's supposed to be 90,000 or 10 years, but you'll get quite a lot of internet know it alls telling you the belt is due at 144,000 (which it used to be, but Volvo changed it years ago).

My local franchised Volvo stealership wanted £900 for the belt job, so I'd expect it to be a £500 job anywhere else.

Is quite an active and knowledgeable forum. They focus more on the cars than general chitchat.

Usually just before the current one let’s go, and not after.

We've just moved on a V40 XC, 2ltr d3.
It really is a lovely car, it is rapid enough and really comfy but not as economical as the old Skoda. It did about 40mpg but I did like to boot it everywhere.
Can belt was a problem because the local people that we use to do our servicing didn't want to touch it for some reason.
We had it for 7 years and would have kept it for a lot longer, but I got a company car.

Looks like it's the euro 6 2015+ are what he wants. Some 2015 are euro 5. Older engine I'm guessing. He wants a V40. 2L Diesel.

This was our Cross Country...

With the 2l Volvo VEA engine in D2 trim.

Only thing that went wrong was the EGR, the day after we picked it up. The garaged fixed it under their used warranty.

There's some neat features, like the front passenger seat folds flat so you can load it up with Billy bookcases from Ikea.

Try and find one with the full sensus system, ours had the smaller screen and no sensus (there's a button with world logo, if it's not got that it's the council spec media/radio).

Did I already mention it had the nicest, most supportive seats ever?

The Cross Country sits an inch or two higher than the normal V40, gets more unpainted bumper trim (for going off road!) and the roof rails.

I don't think the VEAs got adblue until 2019.

I think my 2019 S90 was the first year (for the S90 anyway) to get a blue.

The 2015 V40 didn't.

Apparently a full tank of ad blu is good for 6/8k miles anyway, not an issue. He's looking at MY 15/16s maybe 17. Just needed to know how to tell it's euro 6 on the 15s and not euro 5.

Lad thought he'd be filling adblu every tank, I didn't have a clue. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The S90 had an 11l adblue tank, I did almost 40k in it and filled the adblue twice (the car came with a full tank).

The wife's 2018 BMW X2 has never needed adblue and she's done 20k in it.

Ye, seems it's not a concern. Think the euro 6 would be the better choice. He's giving me a headache. 👍🏻

He's seen one, wants us to go and have a look tomorrow 73 miles away ffs. Told him, let's have a good look this week and go look next weekend. 🤕

The adblue brings its own problems, the injector in the exhaust can clog with crystals and bring on the EML.
