In work. People that ask me a question, scoff at the answer, look at me as though I'm the thicko in the conversation, tell me why they are right in the first place (when they're talking bollox), and then follow up with another question that a fucking toddler would know the answer to ... Most recently, 'how do I make a cup of tea taste stronger?'.

That's forums. People rarely want answers on forums, they mostly just want agreement with what they've already decided in their headsTaff wrote: Fri Feb 20, 2026 9:56 am In work. I once worked with a guy who would call me over and quietly ask me a question about how to do something, I'd tell him and then he would repeat it back to me, loudly. After a while I realised what he was doing. He was making it look like I had gone to him to ask the question and he was telling me how to do it.Taff wrote: Fri Feb 20, 2026 9:56 am In work. After that, when he asked his quiet question, I would repeat back, loudly "Oh, so you want to know how to..."
He stopped asking me after that.

Use more tea
Use less water
Let it brew longer
Use less milk
Just man up and drink it black
Any of them will do you.

I used to offer info/advice to friends in resort whilst in group conversation - usually someone saying they need to know something/how to do something/where to find etc etc etc so, if I knew I would give the infoTaff wrote: Fri Feb 20, 2026 9:56 am In work. Pretty much every time I'd be ignored; but a bit later (week or next time the group met up) said person would say something like "oh, I worked it out, I did xyz and everything is sorted" - no comment that Nogs might have just suggested doing xyz
So I just stopped offering help !!
And given most people in resort only contacted me to ask for a favour, now I don't reply to messages for a minimum of 48 hours - just gives them time to sort out the issue for themselves

My stock response to questions asked to me by my team is 'What do you think we/you should do?'
Invariably they know and are just looking for validation.

It's fair to say that's how lots of 1:1 psychiatry appears to work. Customer pays someone to listen to them while they work things out for themselves.

I worked for an organisation that was big on 'personal development'. One hotel-at-the-seaside-training-jolly was on 'listening skills'.
Came back and, on a drive somewhere, the missus was doing a standard, captive audience download about something or other so I unloaded my 'new found skills' and responded as trained. In a shocked voice she said 'You're listening to me! Stop it, it's quite disconcerting!'.

Many moons ago when I was in sales it was the 80/20 rule. 80% listening and most of the 20% validating what they just told you!

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
I’m trying to book tickets to go to the snooker world championships in York in November / December. I’d like to book tickets across two days, ideally Sunday and Monday, taking advantage of standard and premium seats across four possible sessions, either all day tickets or for a couple of quid more, separate tickets per session.
I can only add a single ticket per session to the basket or I can add up to 8 tickets per session… I’ve tried multiple tabs to find the seats and then adding the preferred seat from each tab to the basket and when I proceed to checkout, only the most recently added seat is there!
FFS it is 2026 and surely Shirley it is possible to want to watch more than a single day / session of people with sticks hit balls into holes around a piece of slate…

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
Pretty minor but still a
on the typical way companies operate.
Have used Brita water filter jugs for years. On the quite recent ones there's a timer in the lid that counts down in 4 chunks of time ie 4 weeks, then it's time to change the filter.
Bought a rather swish new glass jug. The new 'timer' is just an LED that blinks green, amber or red when you pour water out of the jug. Replace filter when it blinks red. It's supposed to measure both time and water volume treated. It appears to just count how many times the jug is tilted to pour water.
Elapsed time from green to red for the first filter? 11 days. cf 28 days previously.
What a blindingly obvious con to flog nearly 3 times as many filters.
It will be ignored. I didn't die when all the previous ones were changed at 28 (and sometimes a few days longer).

We (well the wife, I drink tap water) have a jug purchased (at huge expense) from Lakeland. Filters running out, off to Lakeland website and order what appears to be new set of filters. When they arrive the look subtly different, so I ring up. Oh yes, you need the heritage filters. WTF dont they label the damn things differently! The new jug and filter show up in the catalogue and website, but you have to know the code number to get replacements for the old (1 year old) jug!

I have decreed the water filter will be changed every 6 weeks. I mark it on the calendar and just like Jean Luc Picard,I make it so.

We have an under-sink inline filter. Only needs filter changing every few years.Skub wrote: Wed Feb 25, 2026 1:00 pm I have decreed the water filter will be changed every 6 weeks. I mark it on the calendar and just like Jean Luc Picard,I make it so.

I can understand a filter if the water tastes funny, but my filter takes out almost everything, including fluoride that gets added to protect our teeth. Seems daft to me.

I had one of those too years ago,it was great. Then it exploded and flooded the place. I'm too chickenshit to buy another.
