The fella who keeps my car in order. = Cash.
Local bakery. = Cash under £5.
Hardware store. =Cash under £5.
Plumber. = Cash preferred,ie cheaper for me.
Window cleaner. = Cash.
A couple of years ago when we had building work going on,we paid cash to the tune of £90k. What a drag that was pulling it out of an ATM at £500 a time.

We are compelled to have cash, otherwise it's no fish and chips, no pizza and no Chinese. It annoys me, but it's what they want you to pay with.
My son often gets paid in cash, in spite of asking for payment into his business account. He's on first name terms with the bank after his frequent visits to pay it in.
That said, many people we get work done by always give cash payment as an option. At least until I insist on a receipt if I think it's required.
Pretty ambivalent about it in truth.

I get paid cash. Last bank in our town shut down around October. Next town just announced there bank is shutting down so even taking money into the bank is a challenge. Think the last time i had this issue in England must have been the mid 80's but a few times when in Wales. They eventually take it as i wont be sooking 60lt of diesel back out the tank.

I remember from the last time I went to the TT that the day before you went back to Blighty you made well sure that you had no Manx notes or coins in your wallet...
I've always got cash on me, usually £200 walking about money. For the first time in about a year I used an ATM today to restock my supply of ready cash.
I did also key in 22 limes on the scale / balance @ Tesco rather than the 2 I bought, and didn't notice until I got home, which warmed my urine a smidge, thankfully limes ain't that expensive.
Why should we pay cash everywhere with banknotes instead of a card ?
- I have a £50 banknote in my pocket. Going to a restaurant and paying for dinner with it.
The restaurant owner then uses the bill to pay for the laundry.
The laundry owner then uses the bill to pay the barber.
The barber will then use the bill for shopping.
After an unlimited number of payments, it will still remain a £50 value, which has fulfilled its purpose to everyone who used it for payment and the bank has jumped dry from every cash payment transaction made.
BUT
IF I come to a restaurant and pay digitally via Card,
- the bank fees for my payment transaction charged to the seller are 3%, so around £1.50
( and so will be the fee of £1.50 for each further payment transaction )
-for the owner re laundry or
- payments of the owner of the laundry shop,
- or payments of the barber etc.....
Therefore, after 30 transactions, the initial £50 will exist at only £5, and the remaining £45 has become the property of the bank … thanks to all of the digital transactions and fees!
Use it or lose it folks…

So what, and you'd be right to think that, however, it was a zippo I've had for well over 30 years which had an Ogri enamel badge glued to it (and i got it absolutely dead center, it looked factory).
I think it fell out of my jacket pocket somewhere in Sportbikeshop Southampton, but wasn't there anywhere when we went back to look for it. (Even searched their bins). I hope that whoever picked it up and pocketed it appreciates it.

The author has obviously never googled 'Cash handling fees' or investigated the cost of cash for businesses at all.
Our Chinese and chippy are cash only, always worth having cash with you, at least £50 I reckon. They've told me it's so the bank doesn't take any. Payment for work in cash won't count as income obviously, so in retirement cash payment for work is definitely king.
Think we all pay enough tax in this god forsaken country so a nice cash in hand job is very welcome.

That's a load of bollox my good friend
Its one of many versions bandied aroudn by the cash is king types, or groups. I do get it though and can see the point, but cant see how any business can avoid using banks and incurring their charges, well unless your. single trader with a very small turnover? Digital currency also plays into the 15 minute city thing.
I very rarely use cash. I always used to keep a emergency cash fund in the house but dont anymore. I sold some things on FB market place last year and got paid in cash and its still in my bedside cabinet drawer. No idea when Ill have cause to use it as everyone i've had round here to do work has asked for bank transfer?
Isn't there some importance attached to the black economy?
