Travelling/holidays... Where do you need to go before you get too old ?
Watching the BBC race around the world prog, must admit South America looks a pretty cool place.
I've always fancied Japan/China as well, although more outside cities than inner city..
I know mrs Weeksy wants a year of 4 on the beaches in MAldives/somewhere though...

Japan, Cuba, Costa Rica.
I'd quite like a debauched weekend in Las Vegas too.

Re: Travelling/holidays... Where do you need to go before you get too old ?
I fancy China and Japan.
I'd like to do a long train trip, for reasons I can't fathom. Maybe Canada and tick that box too.
And I have plans to travel the length of Italy on two wheels.
I do like to get away from touristy places when I travel and just watch real life go by. I find even if you don't speak the lingo a smile and attempting the local version of 'Hello' goes a long way, and pointing at food and beer is a universal language.

I can't think of many things worse than Vegas myself.KungFooBob wrote: Tue Nov 18, 2025 8:48 am Japan, Cuba, Costa Rica.

However, i'm an outlier than i'd happily live in a sleepy village in or around the Alps as long as i could get beer
Vegas though, god that seems like my worst nightmares.

You get to the Maldives and go 'Wow! This looks stunning, just like a postcard!'. The after 10 minutes you go, 'Yep. It still looks stunning. What's there to do? Oh, not much...'weeksy wrote: Tue Nov 18, 2025 8:24 am

Of you like snorkeling and diving, or you just like to veg on a beach, it's great. If you like to go for a walk and discover things, you're a bit stuffed.
Cuba was proper interesting when we went. I'd really recommend it.

To be fair, I spend all winter in Courchevel and will be spending my summers close to Saint Tropez. If I'm not in either of those places I'll be in Cornwall.
Each to their own, but that does me just fine. As I like to say......

I fancy Cuba, but when we recently re-did our ESTA for the US one of the disqualifing countries on the list was Cuba.gremlin wrote: Tue Nov 18, 2025 8:51 am

We’ve got more plans to go back to the US and having to go and get a visa would be a pita.

After retiring it seemed like everyone asked 'So, where are you going for holidays?' My stock reply was 'I am on holiday'.Jody wrote: Tue Nov 18, 2025 9:26 am To be fair, I spend all winter in Courchevel and will be spending my summers close to Saint Tropez. I woke up at 5am on Sunday. Started a new game on 7 days to live (survival zombie game Xbox). Apart from going out to buy a new controller, and an hour's walk. I played continuously until 3am Monday.
I Slept for a few hours, went for another walk, cooked eggs and salmon on baguette and then played through to about 10 pm yesterday......
But it's my day off today, so I might not do too much

Oh, as for what I'd like to add to my 'been, done, got T-shirt' list - a month+ in Japan inc. a short week in Tokyo. + maybe a trip around some of Oz, starting in Sydney to make up for the disappointment when my boss refused to let me go on a years secondment to our Sydney office.

I've always thought it looks that way - pretty, but I'd be bored out of my skull after a couple of days.gremlin wrote: Tue Nov 18, 2025 8:51 am You get to the Maldives and go 'Wow! Central and South America are high on my to-visit list.
Some of Africa too, though I've never fancied South Africa. I'd really like to go and see lions and elephants etc.

Did SA decades ago (Mandela was still in power...yeah, that long ago!). Again, really good fun, interesting, headed into Namibia, canoed the Orange River and I would have recommended it to anyone.
Nowadays..? Hmmmm.

Re: Travelling/holidays... Where do you need to go before you get too old ?
My wife did the whole round the world shit when she was in her late 20's - I'm reasonably well travelled too but not to that degree, Central and South America appeals as does Africa.
Current plan is that I retire early, she sells her business and we buy a half-decent sailing boat - likely only cover the Med over a longish period of time but perhaps further afield. I'd like to cross the Atlantic but she's less keen by sail, but I may still do it with a couple of others then meet her there. Once done I can chill wherever we chose to live and she can pick up a bit of consulting work until she can retire too, she's 8 years younger than me

Re: Travelling/holidays... Where do you need to go before you get too old ?
I have a yen to see Australia and particulary New Zealand. Southern part of South America beckons as well, Argentina, Peru, Chille, but so do parts of the US, particularly the Appalacians and Texas. The whole eastern and central area of Canada is yet to be ticked off the list. Then there are the Himalyas and the Hindu Kush.................. So many places, so little time (and insufficient cash too)
Then there is the small issue that Mrs CJ would rather stay in the UK.
Seriously, we did a big 6 week road trip in the USA 25 years ago, as a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Then we did 4 more slightly shorter trips to the US and Canada, plust a couple of expedition cruises. I would like to continue exploring as long as my money and my boidy hold out, but she thinks it is time to play at being grown-up. I don't do grown-up.
A few more countries to tick off in Europe on bike trips too but not too many left on that list now, about 2 dozen have been ticked and I think I have about a dozen to go and some of them (Belarus and Ukraine) are a bit iffy at present.

Havana/Cuba, and deffo more of America, but not really interested in anywhere else. Holidays for me are sun and beaches an I have no real interest in cultural pursuits.

I'd like to take the kids to Madagascar - Nosy Be. Baobabs, lemurs, chameleons, large whales.
It's hard not to want to go back to Thailand. I was going to do a good month there in Jan / Feb 2026 but I'm back in a relationship so that's probably not such a good idea.

Re: Travelling/holidays... Where do you need to go before you get too old ?
I have done a lot of long haul via work and personal time:
Oz X 4
South Africa - 15 times
Singapore - 10 or so times
Russia 10 times
Shanghai - 4 times
USA 30 plus times
Japan - 10 times
Plus Thailand, Vietnam, Canada, Philippines, Botswana, Morocco, Tunisa, Mozambique, Nigeria, most of Europe numerous times
To some extend I am over the wanderlust - I like meeting people and working with them as it gave you a real insight into their lives - so one high spot was being in Singapore at a leaving do with 12 or so Singapore Chinese and being the only Westerner at the table.
Holidays not so much - this year has been Japan and Nepal. Next year with be Australia - but probably for the last time. I am getting on in years and long haul is certainly not as exciting as it used to be. The wife is definitely at that stage - and a bit rubbish on holidays anyway.
I have been to and seen most of the things I want to - though New Zealand is still a possibility on my Oz trip - but it is all about the scenery. I lived up and Alp, I have had 8 years of stunning views!
I absolutely hate overtourism (and yes, I have been one). The first time I went to RSA, Cape Point was me, wife, two other people and some aggressive baboons. Boulders Beach was just us and 15 million penguins. Last time is was in CT, Cape point now has a ventricular railway to the lighthouse and thousands of rude Chinese, semi rude Koreans and polite Japanese all standing there doing peace signs or opening their arms to show the view. The baboons have given up - not surprised. Boulders Beach has become a theme park!
I have never been to South America - it had never really appealed. The thought of hiking to Machu PIcchu with hordes of others just doesn't strike me as seeing the genuine side of Peru ( or Brazil, Or Argentina or wherever you may be).
The thoughts of folks queuing on Everest to reach the summit just seems to be the most plastic tourist experience ever.
Iceland might be nice to go to ...

I'm not a big fan of much of China as a place to visit for fun. It is the best destination if you want to drink tiger penis wine with the snake head gangs though.
