Taking a dog on a bike

Got in to a bit of an argument today with one of my best friends, he used to live very close to me and we would see each other
a few times a week but then he moved about 100 miles away and hes 82 now and doesn't want to/isn't able to drive long distances.

I am riding a 125 on a CBT and its too far for me to make the journey to go see him but I plan soon on getting a Tricity 300 as I have a full car licence,
so I will be able to go visit him, he wants me to bring my dog on the back of the Tricity as he knew her from a puppy and loves her. I said no way
would I ever do that and we got in to a bit of a heated discussion about it, he just didn't seem to understand what a ridiculous thing to do it is.
This is probly going to sound stupid to most of you but I have had her since she was about 7weeks old and I think of her as my daughter so
care for her just as much.

Am I talking shit and its okay to take a dog on the back of a bike ?

It's her birthday today and she is 6yrs old

My local bike club did a ride out to Brid I went on. One guy on a GPZ500 had a dog carrier thing strapped to the pillion seat.

I thought it was a bit daft. Even more so when he didn't make a corner and rode straight into a farmers field and dropped it.

Poochy was fine, but you don't always have your own crash.

I guess you could say the same about a human pillion, but at the end of the day they've made a decision to be a passenger and an animal doesn't have that choice.

It's true that the animal hasn't made the choice.

However, there are plenty of people who have taken dogs on bikes, and plenty of kit to make it easier.

I saw a bike last year that had an open top box with a metal frame over the top, and the dog harness was tethered to the top of the frame.

The dog looked happy as they trundled down the dual carriageway.

Yup. V happy with the arrangement was the dog too. IIRC it wore a pair of 'Doggles' too.

Herriewullie used to ride around with Watt the Dog (Border Terrier iirc) in a champagne box bolted to the back of his TDM. IIRC he was tethered to stop him jumping out if he saw anything chaseable, but i never saw him do anything more than sit and enjoy the ride. Fucking hilarious to follow, you could tell how fast you were going exactly by how much dog you could see!

A dog I had in the UK used to ride on the tank of my Z900. Lived in the boonies at the time so no traffic issues. Did have a cop in Bury St Ed ask me not to ride into town with her though. She loved it & would jump onto the tank even when the bike was just parked outside.

Personally I wouldn't take my dog on the bike, don't imagine the kit available for dogs would be tested or much use in a crash. Not always predictable what the dog will want to chase or if they get loose in a minor crash and got spooked on a busy road.

Even seeing dogs with their heads out of car windows kind of worries me.
Its said that above 60 even with a lid on and without hearing protection damages human hearing so it can't do the much more sensitive dogs hearing much good.

I know a couple of people who used to carry dogs in their sidecars and everytime the dog seemed to enjoy it though.
Mixed bag I guess.
Our dogs a fair size so its not so much an option, as this scaled representation of me and him done by some local kids shows.

Spotted in Esperance WA, and the bike had Queensland registration plates on.
That, is a very long ride.

I had a dog rucksack for my Mum's Shih Tzu, there are a few choices on Amazon. I only used it for emergencies and the dog couldn't wait to get out of it. But, it worked.
