The heating test

3 builders bags of wood arrived today, wood burner is on and I’m sweating out the lurgey in 30C.

Our heating has been going on for an hour or so in the morning for the past couple of days. Just enough to take the chill off . Or so the OH says, me I’m fine without it.

We’ve got a few hundred quid credit on the utilities so it’s neither here nor there if it’s on early or not.

Mine has kicked in a few times, thermostatically controlled, but not on that much. I’ve advanced the time slot a couple of times as I’ve been warm enough, I suspect it won’t be long before I’m not doing that and just letting it run.

My biggest consideration heating wise is whether to relocate the home office from the spacious dining room with a large expanse of glass French doors or to take a spot in one of the spare bedrooms, which means a longer commute… I imagine it’d be more efficient heating a smaller room with less glass even if it is a greater distance from the boiler, and more importantly, the coffee maker!

Aaah - but with the longer commute and extra distance to the coffee machine, you can count that as exercise on top of the dog walking

I know it'll get cold soon, and it's not exactly warm as such, but I'm sitting here with the side door open just cos - fresh air is lovely !! It's fresh but not cold.

If I had any heating on I'd feel I couldn't do that

I know I'll have to go work out the towel rail soon and if there's a timer on it cos a cold shower room in the morning is just wrong !!!

Might have to start putting a rad on a bit in the area I dry clothes as that just takes too long

A couple of days ago I was sitting wearing a fleece and shivering. So I turned the heating on. I guess shivering while wearing a fleece is a good enough test.

Filly complained of feeling cold, wondered [aloud, in my direction] whether we should have the heating on?

I checked the thermostat: 19.5° - which is what the heating is set to ...

My heating system was activated two days ago, thermostat is at 16C so if it drops below that, the heating will turn on during the hours of 5.30am - 9am and 4.30pm to 10pm. The rest of the time use a jumper/duvet/single malt to keep warm...

I decided to remove the living room and dining room radiators two weeks, just before the temperature dropped. So it'll go on when I get round to replumbing that. So another planning success

so I reckon we're about 8 weeks shy of needing the heating on.

Of course this actually means the heating will be put on in around half that time as I live with 2 women

Or just 7 days as it turns out bleedin' waste of gas and money

If Mrs Gremlin complains that 'it's bloody freezing' then rest assured that any heatwave is over as the temperature will have dropped below 35 degrees.

Heating kicked on this morning, 8C outside and the wife proclaimed loudly "I'm freezing".... ah well, it was good while it lasted.

We're redecorating an upstairs bedroom at the moment so the windows wide open to get rid of paint fumes so it's extra jumper time.

At the current rate of progress I might escape until mid-Nov.

New build here. No heating on yet. We have the back door open a lot with puppy training too (the door is open almost all day).

I suspect we’ll turn it on around November - but Hive will nag me to death if it goes below a certain amount

Apparently it was 6 - 8 degrees in the valley this morning (forgot to look at home and I think it's possible a smidge colder than the depot, the bus said 8 degrees as I got close to Bourg!).

I've made sure all the rads are on the 'don't freeze' setting before and fully expected to need to turn them up when I go back this morning.

Nope, walked in and straight away walked around all the rads to check they weren't hot cos it was pretty warm as I walked in !!!

I mean, I don't feel the cold that much, it's not hot flushes, I've just always 'run hot' and not felt the cold like others !! (My sister remembers our childhood as a constant battle against hypothermia - whereas I do remember frost on the inside of the windows, but not actually being cold all the time!!)


Sooo, for now, I guess I'm paying over the odds for heating at the mo I pay 90€ a month for heating and water on a meter and they will balance it at the end of the year - since there's no bath, I'm guessing I should get some back at the end of August !! Especially if I manage to source some wood for the wood burner

Surprisingly it's rarely been on more than a couple of hours a day so far, hell it's still warm enough that I haven't started wearing socks yet.
