In 1907, aboard HMS Sphinx off the coast of Zanzibar and Mozambique, a British sailor named Joseph Chidwick witnessed a group of chained slaves clinging tightly to the deck of a passing dhow. At his warning, the crew intervened, rescuing them, freeing the shackles that had bitten into their flesh for years, and transporting them to safety. That night, interrogations of the survivors and the dispatch of marines ashore led to the capture of two suspected slave traders—Arab men whose fate, as Chidwick later recalled, was met without the slightest mercy.

Decades later, Chidwick’s own son, Samuel, donated the harrowing photographs to the Royal Naval Museum, ensuring that the images of broken chains and defeated slaves would endure as lasting proof of both cruelty and compassion upon the open sea

In a dusty corner of a Fresno junk shop, a photograph sat unnoticed—until a collector stumbled upon it in 2010, paying just $2 for what would later be recognized as one of the most significant images in Wild West history. The photo shows Billy the Kid, croquet mallet in hand, a moment of calm amidst the chaos of his notorious life. In the midst of bloodshed and gunfights, here he is, playing croquet with his posse, the Regulators, a reminder that even legends have moments of ordinary, quiet leisure.

The image was taken in 1878, just a month after the brutal Lincoln County War, in Chaves County, New Mexico. It’s the second known photograph of Billy the Kid, and experts quickly validated its authenticity. The photo is a rare window into a man whose face we’ve mostly come to know from wanted posters and newspaper stories—a man more often associated with violence than with moments of peace. The relaxed demeanor in the image stands in stark contrast to the fearsome outlaw the world remembers.

Today, the photograph, once tossed away in a forgotten box, is a treasure. Experts have authenticated it, placing it alongside the few remaining mementos of a Wild West figure whose legend continues to captivate. From $2 to millions, this photo tells the story of Billy the Kid like few others—offering a fleeting, yet telling glimpse into the life of a man who was both a myth and a person, bound by time yet still immortalized in history

I often take folk to a volcano you can see from miles away, but not readily accessible.
You can see from miles away that the side has slipped off, like snow off a roof.

When we got there today, some nutter had managed to get to the top of the loose stuff
There was no way up and no way down. Completely mystery???

Zoom in really close and you can see the look on his face that reads, 'Why is that bloke just taking photos of me and not calling for help?'

I thought it was a woman too. I'm guessing she's supposed to Billy.

There is always a way down, usually a fairly quick one.
