Been involved in a two day environmental disaster of monumental, if not biblical proportions.

There was a cardboard box in the garage that held 10 or 12 knackered 4ft neon tubes. They were moved outside & kinda wedged behind the gas meter on the side of the house, awaiting disposal.

Roomies son decided that they needed to go to the city dump yesterday, Dump told him they only take them one day each month so he bought them home again. He put the box between the side of the garage & the ShitBox Honda.
Wind blew the box over, top end of box was open, tubes shattered & spread broken glass all over.

He had a complete mental breakdown & started screaming about mercury, hazmat suits, gloves, face masks, "cleaning" the driveway with sticky tape to prevent mercury contamination which was (according to him) coming in through his open bedroom window in spite of the house being positive pressure from the swamp cooler so air was blowing out of his bedroom window.
He then fled the house convinced it was now a SuperFund clean up site akin to Chernobyl.

I went outside, swept up all the glass & put it in the trash can, then wedged the box behind the gas meter again.

He came home about 11pm last night having spent several hours just driving around Palmdale (far riskier than actually drinking mercury)... after three people had told him these tubes don't contain ANY mercury.

This morning I loaded an old mower in the truck to take to the local mower shop to donate it for parts. To load it, I had to take the grass box off which resulted in a load of grass clippings & leaves etc falling on the ground.
I grabbed the leaf blower & sent it all to the street.

The noise of the leaf blower caused him to leap out of his pit (at 10am), get dressed & haul ass down the road in his car in under a minute, then phoned his mum screaming about mercury contamination. Totally lost the fucking plot, completely unhinged & told his mum he won't be home for "at least 24 hours" to allow the contamination to dissipate. The final words from his mum were "when you get back here, you can move all your crap, & yourself, out of the house".

Somehow I'm to blame for him moving the box in the first place.. which was moved out of the garage so he could install a rack of shelves two weeks ago to store some of his crap.. but still remains empty.

AFAIK the main problem with neon tubes is that the glass is coated inside with a beryllium compound that inhibits wound healing. Just dont cut yourself and you will be OK.

Finally added lift up castors to the workbench so I could shift it under the window in the garage, which involved clearing the make do bench (two sawhorses with chipboard flooring on top.

Made a make do platform for the the new pizza oven with the sawhorses and a pallet, sack barrowed the oven into the garden but now need some assistance to lift it from the box onto the platform, bloody thing weighs 58kgs. I’m hoping a neighbour has 10 mins spare.

Pizza dough is proving and I just need some fresh basil to make Neapolitan margarita pizzas

Spent most of the day at the local country show day drinking, and now bloody starving as I refuse to pay show prices for a scabby burger or hot dog.

Also got a mardy look from one food wagon after walking off when i saw they were using brioche buns for a bacon bap FFS brioche bread should be banned outright, never mind yesterdays ban of ninja swords, its bastard brioche that's what's wrong with this country

Still confused about source of pain until I was reminded that I single handedly lifted a mower into the truck yesterday... which took THREE guys to take out of the truck when I dropped it off.

Yesterday now !! But, finally caught up properly with a mate up here. We have a mutual friend that has bought a restaurant in Plagne Centre (he started as a commis chef in a restaurant I used to use for years so I've known Sam about 10 years and seen his progression )

So, instead of the suggested pizza at the 'usual' and very english (but actually french) place, we went to Sam's place for steak. Only he doesn't do steak steak - sooooo

Côte de beouf it was Bit of a mad evening price wise, but damn it was GOOOOOOOOOD

And the bones went home with BigStu for his dog

Have had a biiiig lie in this morning and am now on plan to make a Lemon Cheesecake for some friends up here and for a sunset BBQ that's planned for Tuesday

First day at work for 6 days, colleague spent 20 mins telling what had broken since I was last in, it’d probably have been easier if I’d been told what was working. I looked at our overview and mumbled about the state of one particular line and hoped nothing would break on it
3 hours later 22000V cable tripped and due to so much being already failed on that line we had to restrict the train service. Lots of phone calls and tele conferences to explain to the people that move the trains if they keep trying to run the service they want to they’ll end up with no service.

Fixed the electrical problem on the mower. I was all prepared to do continuity tests etc as it seemed to be a duff safety cut-out switch, but I had a suspicion it was a specific one, so changed that first.

Boom. Problem solved, for £12, a couple of squirts of WD40, and five minutes effort

I'm joining some friends for a mountain top sunset bbq on Tuesday - so knowing how knackered I am after work, I spent midday ish (after a decent lie in!) making cheesecake for dessert

Also meant I could make a small number of individual ones to give to some friends up in resort that do rather like a proper non baked lemon cheesecake !!

chatted with a Spanish friend - well mostly listened and nodded cos her French is heavily accented and I rarely understand what she says !! I have to hope I've understood the basic sense and nod and smile

Now home to make my lunch for tomorrow and have an early night !!!

Discovered our neighbours have a glis glis issue, which means fairly soon we will have an issue too!
I've seen them about but assumed (wrongly) they were squirrels.
Also discovered they're protected, so you have to have a license to kill them.
Apparently they're good eating' boy!

I didn't know we had them in the UK, but I suppose we had a lot of Romans and they're the ones that thought they were a good lunch and probably brought them here.

Turns out they're fond of Tring and eat your electrics/make your house go up in flames according to Wiki.

It's cos modern wiring (especially vehicle wiring) uses a soy based insulation. Rodents love a bit of soy.
