After another week in Fort William car park I've decided that next year the plan won't be a van, but a MoHo.

Reason being that I'll keep the Transit Custom as it's worth half of fuck all for the local stuff and stuff that needs a van. Then have the MoHo for weekend comforts.

Currently I'm leaning towards a Roller Team 675.

Due to size of garage and overall spec. The only downsides being fuel consumption and speed. But I'll live with those as we'll be doing a lot less miles when this arrives due to house move.

If you need one of those bigguns, then there's not much else to be said, but theyh are a handful in high winds and guzzle fuel a bit due to the shape. But being self contained is so worth it!

When i was looking, I was trying to buy exactly what I wanted.
It didn't exist so bought the biggest van I could and had someone do the conversion.

Look at the plated weight too.

That 675 is plated at 3500kg (which you can drive on a normal car license). I bet the vehicle itself takes up most of that, I'd wager it's actually got fuck all payload.

I assume you passed your car test before 1997, so you've probably got grandad rights to Class C, which means you can drive the heavier plated mohos.

Also... in the specs (or maybe even on a sticker in the garage) there will be a load weight for the garage itself. Mine was only rated for 150kg, but I regularly carried around 200kg (Ducati race bike and spares, fuel and chairs, etc..), I was confident it could take it because of the way the chassis rails extended under the garage, but not all do. Worth checking if you plan to carry bikes, tools, etc...

I'd highly recommend a factory converted van rather than a (kerist can't remember what the term is), err one of those.

If you get a long-wheel base Ducato based van-conversion then you know that you can get anywhere a DHL courier can, and you'll find it far easier to park.

Admittedly mine had an extended roof, but the non-extended high-top van conversions (like the one I linked to in the other thread) aren't much lower. Believe me, losing 4" of width makes a great difference when you're travelling around, and knowing that the body is completely sound (ie isn't a load of shoddily screwed together panels) is reassuring.

I'd also say that in my experience: an ex-hire van was a good buy (even if it was the 2nd one we chose.... ): everything was working and we didn't take huge depreciation hit. IIRC we bought it for just under 30K, spent about 5K on mods (permanent gas bottles, more solar than we needed, etc ), and still sold it (admittedly pre-covid) for more than 30K.

The layout is very important. Can be very expensive mistake.

We bought one last week after a long time looking, reading, talking to loads of owners and generally getting frustrated that there was nothing in a sensible budget.

We knew the layout that we wanted from the caravans that we've owned, and We were told by quite a few people to avoid the Ford based vans because of loads of different issues.

Picked it up last Wednesday, first outing was Thursday, bought a new leisure battery and rewired the solar panels on Saturday

Remember that these things are loooong, 7.5m long and do 25mpg (which is about the same as the vito towing the caravan so ok for us)

Best advice is to go around a few places and look at what's available in all the different layouts.

Oh, I forgot to mention the noise, fuck me it's noisy in the cabin, the fridge shelves, mugs, plates and bowls, saucepans and a million other things all rattling in unison with every little ripple in the road.

My 2.2l 130bhp Mk7 Transit would easily do mid 30's if you stuck to 60mph.

There's only one way to drive it, foot to the floor.

I didn't but a MoHo to stick to 60mph ffs, it was bad enough having to do that with the caravan. I think I'll be getting it remapped soon to help us get up these local hills

TBF I did most of my driving in Fronch on the B roads where the limit was 55 anyways.

At 70mph it sounded like the hab was going to explode!
