Found this Mowdy yesterday, it was on very compacted ground, trying to dig in.
I picked it up and put it somewhere better.
The stuff on it's back looks dodgy but was just debris from its digging attempts.



Oh and it was a properly solid little fecker.

Not got toggles or a hood I think.

(Got me googling though. A duffle coat or duffle bag is made from duffle fabric (Duffel fabric from the place of that name in the Antwerp area. Live and learn eh? ...I thought they were Scottish because of the horn toggles).

TBF i never gave it a thought where they came from. I had one as a kid with toggles but no hood. I was sure you got them with buttons. Them big round things that looked like leather snake skin.

The Wiki is quite interesting. The Navy had a version that became known as a Convoy coat. I think a lot ended up in army surplus stores. (I had an RAF greatcoat from the army surplus).

Also had a dark green Gloverall duffle when I was a student. Great until it got really soaked then it weighed a ton - but it took a lot of rain to do that

We lived in tenements with six in a block. If it was raining, out on the stairs was where the duffle coat was left for the night. Odd occasion it would come in at night and hung in front of the coal fire, but once we got a full fitted carpet it was out in the stars again for the night Oh how i loved them lino boarders.
