I went down to Bognor Regis,

The name Bognor is always enough to raise a smile, but the phrase 'Bugger Bognor' even more so.

Apparently King George V was sent to Bognor to recover in the sea air following lung surgery. It was suggested he bestow his Royal patronage to the town with the suffix 'Regis', as a mark of his appreciation.

His reply: 'Bugger Bognor!'

Notwithstanding, diplomacy smoothed the way and it is now Bognor Regis.

Really stupid in a lot of ways but - working for decent managers does make me very very happy !!!

The last three weeks (I think) I've worked lunchtimes as well as morning and afternoon school runs, so no chance to go to Chambery for lunch

I miss those lunches !!!

Next weekend OH is doing a four day trip so there's no way I can go (can't take extra days off as the week for the family visit is agreed but due to contract/french rules it's unpaid - although I'll get the holiday earned at the end of the year, can't have paid holiday for a bit longer )


Anyway - with a bit of trepidation I went to see the planning manager(also the one that interviewed me and offered me the permanent contract) and asked very nicely if I could have one of the long breaks on either Tuesday or Thursday - and that if that caused a problem with hours, I could do the service line on Saturday morning as an extra (would normally have sat and sun off the rest of June as worked the first Saturday of the month)

He was very understanding and said he would see what could be arranged

Today I get the schedule for Tuesday - Thursday and he's given me the long break on Thursday

Not dramatics, not complaining, not talking to me as if I'm asking for the moon and I'm stupid !!!

Bloody awesome


(Now got to hope OH is on days that day and not doing a stupid shift !!! )

I'm making progress with encouraging the ol' boy to actually use the wheelchair.

"if we use the wheelchair this morning to bring you to breakfast and onto the study, you might not be so tired and likely to sleep when you guests arrive later this morning"

I've no idea if I should be doing this, but it does feel like it's the right thing !!??

Tell him that if he's got the energy he can have a go on your bike.

(Otherwise just get him to give the chair a go - as you have. If he feels more sprightly later he'll put 2+2 together. Sounds like a bright - and interesting - sort of bloke).

Any sort of illness/debilitation (no idea what his issue is) needs managing.

If not using the chair makes him too tired to do other stuff later in the day, then his quality of life suffers.

If using it means he can do other stuff and get a bit more enjoyment, then that is fantastic and builds his quality of life up a bit.

As he realises this he will almost certainly start opting for that just so he can do more stuff.

(An awful lot of people avoid using wheelchairs and go down a steady slope of doing less and less just because they hate the idea of the chair - they need help to see the positives/benefits of actually using it as a tool, not something they are forced into due to their physical issue)

So, in my non medical (but long term rehab) person, I'd say you are 100% doing the right thing and hopefully he will have got into that mindset before you leave so he can keep it up when the other guy gets back.

There's a small group of dirt bikes locally, doing their best to annoy people. One is a two stroke, I'd not caught sight of it but assumed it was some twist and go shit because the rider is constantly blipping the throttle all the way up the road, wah wah wah...
But no! I saw him passing a few days ago, he's balancing a big wheelie on the throttle all the way up the road, every day.

Took baby D to school in the car today (still too far to walk post surgery) and she sat in the front. We measured her over the weekend and confirmed she's tall enough, so she had her first ever front seat drive.

'kin 'ell, where does the time go? It was just last month I had to park in parent and child and lift her out of her baby seat

Hayward Atlantis Evo - made my life so much easier

Unlike my late Da,I've never been much of a gardener,but I brought some of his rhubarb from his garden and stuck it in a big tub a couple of years ago. It didn't do very well,so I divided the crowns and planted it out in the back garden last year.

Well FMOB if it hasn't grown like a forest of elephant ears.

I'm currently sitting stuffing rhubarb crumble and custard into my gob and it's very pleasing indeed.

I don't know how many of you go to or happen upon art and craft type shows but there's an increasing trend for artists/makers of stuff to present 'artists statements' along with their work. People even offer (at a price) to advise people on creating them and arty courses have modules on them.

They are, almost universally, pseudo-psychological, deep and meaningless guff and painfully funny. (There are some spoof statement generators out there but the output is only as funny as the genuine ones).

(I bought a pottery bowl at a gallery yesterday - nice - will be useful, not silly money. This morning I opened the little envelope with the receipt in and found...the artists statement. Oh...my....word. They'd probably have a coronary if they saw me putting my breakfast in it ).

I won't retype the whole lot but here's a trio of samples:
