I'm O Neg too, but my blood is mixed with a cocktail of (legal) drugs so I doubt they would have me.

Used to be a donor but I kept fainting as they clamped the tube off to stop the flow. Last time I was out for about 10 minutes and had 2 doctors and a brace of nurses around me. I decided that my body was telling me I needed the blood more than they did.

I've just moved my donation, I was due to go next week but as above I need to be formally discharged from post surgery care first.

I'm O-neg "Neo", which puts me pretty much at the front of the queue :D No issues getting another slot.

I gave ten pints no bother, and then started to (marginally) fail the iron test every time, so stopped bothering wasting their time.

O+ here, so not as in demand, except by mosquitos and their buddies.

Is the rule still in place about not being able to donate if you've had a transfusion??

I used to donate occasionally (A+ iirc), but last I checked (admittedly around 15 years ago or so...) the transfusion I had after a bike crash put me on the "no thanks" list.

It is, sadly. Anyone who's received blood since 1980 is off the list.

I think there's one exception. I worked with a guy who'd had a transfusion as a new born baby, but because he'd be given his mum's blood it was OK IIRC.

I can see why they don't want blood from folk who have had tatts', piercings, bum sex etc, but to refuse folk who have had a transfusion in the past 40 odd years doesn't inspire confidence in their systems if they received blood from the NHS*

Although if they're going back to eth 809's that would rule out those who got the tainted blood from the US, but you'd think lessons were learned from that

It's a BSE thing innit. There's no test for BSE / CJD "infection" in blood but it's one way it's spread - one of the few ways really, other than eating. It's also a very long lead time between being infected and developing symptoms.

I'm on the no give list here cos I could be a mad cow :angelic-green: Again, I do understand and being a farmers daughter and red meat eater I suppose that in theory I could be in the higher risk of have it.

But it frustrates me a bit here simply cos apparently A neg is pretty useful/rare.

Haven't tried to donate in the short visits to the uk, mostly cos the visits are too short! Not sure the UK would take it either TBH :( :(

I used to give blood regularly, about every couple of months if I remember correctly. I worked in Brentwood and the Blood Transfusion Service had a regional headquarters in the town so I'd go there before work. That was in the 90s, the building is a community hospital now.

I don't think they'd want my blood these days, mostly because of the drugs. I think all the blood transfusions and plasma exchanges I had in 2017 probably cancelled out all my credit with the blood bank. In fact, I'm almost certainly overdrawn.
